This position is for an experienced technical person familiar with all aspects of high throughput sequencing (HTS) and expertise with molecular biology assays related to RNA and DNA. The position requires that the individual has working knowledge of HTS library preparation. As this individual will be asked to aid in experimental design and manuscript preparation, a thorough knowledge of molecular biology and biochemistry is needed. Experience with tissue culture and CRISPR assays is also highly desirable.
The right candidate will develop, conduct and evaluate scientific research in a laboratory. The range of duties includes, not is not limited to: project planning, experimental design, developing methodology, conducting procedures, modifying procedures as needed, data collection and analysis, laboratory management, project management, preparing reports, and communication and instruction. Work may include the training and supervision of staff, students and others in performing specific techniques or phases of experiments.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Isolates RNA, DNA and protein from tissue, cell culture, microbiome and various other sample types.
Constructs HTS libraries for microbiome, DNA and RNA sequencing analysis.
Develops and optimizes novel methods for HTS library preparation including methods for long read sequencing.
Extensive experience and expertise in techniques such as gel electrophoresis (RNA/DNA0, PCR, DNA ligation, restriction digestion, cloning, sub cloning, plasmid preparation is required.
Experience with protein isolation and western blot analysis is highly desired.
Experience with CRISPR assays and tissue culture is also highly desired.
Identifies problems, troubleshoots and analyzes variation observed and reported in regular testing protocols; modifies, refines or adapts technique and procedures; modifies and/or adjusts quality control measures.
Coordinates and/or conducts multiple, concurrent assignments or a multi-faceted project.
Monitors documentation of results: reviews and recognizes documentation, which may lead to modification and adaptation of research methodologies; may collaborate with others.
Adapts and/or modifies experimental methods based upon interpretation of data.
Oversees and assures laboratory compliance with regulatory requirements and JHU standards, policy and procedures.
Work with research staff to prioritize and schedule projects.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics or related field required.
2 years laboratory experience performing relevant techniques.
Master's degree, with related graduate research, may substitute for experience to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Working knowledge of MS Office (especially Excel) and PubMed.
