The purpose of Borgess’ postgraduate year one (PGY1) residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
The program focuses primarily on hospital-based pharmacy. Following orientation, residents participate in a two-week infectious disease lecture block to build on knowledge of the basic principles of infectious disease and pharmacokinetic dosing of antibiotics. The 4-week clinical rotations start following the infectious disease lecture block. Required rotations include Critical Care, Emergency Medicine/Trauma, Internal Medicine, Administration, and Ambulatory Care. Residents are allowed to take four elective rotations, with a variety of different options available. The program also offers a variety of longitudinal rotations, which extend the duration of the residency. These include code blue, stroke response team, and heart failure clinic, among others. Residents will complete their required rotations at Ascension Borgess. However, residents are permitted to complete a one-month elective at a non-Borgess institution, if the experience can be arranged. Required rotations can also be repeated as electives, provided the emphasis changes.
