General Summary/Purpose: This position, under the direction of the Principal Investigator and the Medical Director, will serve as Project Manager responsible for advising, implementing and building capacity on conducting clinical trials for NIH-funded AIDS Clinical Trials Unit (ACTU) and HIV Prevention Trials Unit (HPTN) at Johns Hopkins University. Serve as Project Manager for HIV Clinical Trials within the JHU AIDS Service by advising and coordinating outreach efforts to the population of people living with or at increased risk for HIV in Baltimore and the surrounding counties. Reports directly to the Senior Research Nurse Program Manager and/or Site Principal Investigator.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Design, supervise and manage education to local AIDS Service Organizations about the clinical research program at JHU and the research participation experience.
Advise Medical Providers throughout the area concerning research protocols that are currently available, and responsible for maintaining ongoing working relationship.
Launch, lead and manage workshops, town meetings and other forums on the treatment of HIV disease using the contacts made by the Manager and Outreach Worker(s).
Design, project manage and supervise service-wide staff education and training regarding new protocols. Design, develop and implement patient education and adherence materials.
Advise on all active and prospective clinical trials and provide recommendations in detail on the experience of each trial with potential protocol enrollees, as well as medical providers.
Provide JHU clinicians and staff with training about community perceptions ofresearch, cultural sensitivity, and barriers to enrolling participants.
Engage in dialogue with local health care providers to understand barriers that prevent them from referring patients to clinical studies.
Design, develop, and implement community education on HIV and its intersections with other health and social issues (speaker panels, brown bags, teach-ins).
Evaluate outreach efforts and develop evidence-based recruitment practices to engage MSM, women, racial and ethnic minorities, and marginalized communities through focus groups, stakeholder engagement, and real-time analysis of current efforts.
Advise and collaborate with the Principal Investigator, the Senior Clinical Research Manager, the primary care provider and medical consultants (when appropriate) in regards to recommended changes in current protocols and how to improve.
Lead the THC and ACTU communications activities. Synthesize information on research activities for public disclosure; prepare news releases; devise and execute a comprehensive publication plan to disseminate information derived from ACTU meetings and other activities.
Provide leadership and coordination of the monthly meetings of the JHU ACTU Community Advisory Board meetings. Includes co-chair the meeting, develop regular agendas, compile meeting minutes and action items, and correspond with members of the committee as well as implementing and monitoring progress of activities.
Represent ACTU and THC in public forums including Community meetings, forums, and online webinars.
Liaison between the CRS and the international ACTG/HPTN community boards.
Liaison between the industry sponsor/contract research organization representative, department administrator, and the GLRC and ACTU units to ensure adequate enrollment into ongoing protocols.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
Requires bachelor’s degree, preferably in communication, healthcare or other clinical research fields. Masters preferred in related discipline. Knowledge of high-risk behavior; of drug/addictions; of HIV/AIDS; & Crisis counseling.
Minimum of three years working with, advocating for and representing culturally diverse groups within the community. Minimum of five years of experience is preferred.
Knowledge of the clinical aspects and epidemiology of HIV infection, principles of Good Participatory Practice and Good Clinical Practice.
Experience with, and understanding of, psychological, social and medical needs of persons with HIV infection.
Skilled in navigating technical conversations with medical doctors and researchers as well as communicating in layman's terms with community members.
Skilled in the ability to publicly present and write for publication on a national and local level.
Able to attend National and International HIV/AIDS Conferences.
Strong organizational skills.
Self-motivated and functions well both as a team member and independently.
Ability to use IBM-compatible computers.
Supervise and manage Institutional Review Board submissions.
