Independently leads implementation and management of computing systems and infrastructure components for mission-critical computing environments. Provides an in-depth level of Linux, DNS and application load balancer support services for systems administration, networking, performance tuning, monitoring and capacity planning. Designs and builds infrastructure to support University environment. Recommends, develops and enforces policies and procedures for maintaining the security and integrity of the computing systems and ensures the systems meet availability and disaster recovery requirements. Functions as lead on projects. May lead teams. Coaches the development of other team members. Ability to Implement large complex traditional and cloud computing infrastructures

Opens Systems and Storage provides Linux system administration services, development operations and automation services, application and network load balancing services, Domain Name Services, network file and object storage services, block storage services, log aggregation services and enterprise data backup and restore services.
Key Functions and Expected Performance
Manages the day-to-day administration of Vanderbilt host computers by monitoring system performance, configuration, maintenance and repair. Ensures that records of system downtime and equipment inventory are properly maintained. Applies revisions to host system firmware and software. Works with vendors to assist support activities.
Configures and administers network load balancers and works with application owners and developers to design reliable and optimal solutions for their needs.
Develops new system and application implementation plans, custom scripts and testing procedures to ensure operational reliability.
Leads problem-solving efforts often involving outside vendors and other support personnel and/or organizations.
Establishes, maintains and manages user's accounts. Installs, modifies and maintains systems and utility software on server computer systems. Provides server support related to other software.
Mitigates hardware/software issues, performance bottlenecks and overall system health concerns.
Staff and Personal Development
Stays current with developments in systems administration technology and recommends ways for Vanderbilt IT to take advantage of new technology.
Works with technical and non-technical staff on how to use new software and hardware developed and/or acquired.

Participates in the coordination of project directions and schedules to maximize benefits and minimize impacts on the customer organizations. Participates in the planning and implementation of projects for computer operations and enterprise systems administration.
Follows guidelines and methods for managing Linux systems, Domain Name Services, application/network load balancers and DevOps automation.
Follows procedures to maintain security and protect systems from unauthorized use, acts of nature and user abuse.
Ensures that documentation of supported systems is comprehensive and accurate.
Education and Certifications
Bachelor's degree or equal experience required
Experience and Skills
6 years of experience required
10 Years of experience preferred
Knowledge of scripting languages such as bash, PERL, Python preferred
Experience with Linux system administration is required
Enterprise backup and recovery, system monitoring tools such as Nagios and SCOM and automation tools such as Ansible and SaltStack preferred
Knowledge of network load balancer design, configuration and administration required.
Effective project management techniques required
Ability to plan, organize and document complex system design activities and to configure systems to be consistent with institutional policies/procedures required
Ability to communicate technical/complex information both verbally and in writing required
Ability to perform multiple tasks concurrently and respond to emergency situations effectively required
