Salary Range: $23.00 per hours ($22.43 per hour for new hires)
Columbia University Libraries seek a temporary part-time Bibliographic Assistant VI to provide technical and administrative support for the Preservation, Reformatting and Digitization Department.
Schedule: 26 hours/week to be worked in a regular schedule established with supervisor (all work between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday-Friday)
*Language test in Arabic, basic Photoshop test will be administrated*
**This grant funded position has an end date of March 31, 2021, with possibility of extension**
Collation of rare manuscripts to determine language, correct order, and completeness of each.
Determine and record structural metadata in Excel spreadsheet, according to the project-specific schema.
Derive MARC records from OCLC and enhance for e-book versions.
Update records and provide permanent URL links for each after uploading to Internet Archive.
Quality control of TIFFs including checking for completeness, proper order, and confirmation of image quality as per local specifications.
Process TIFFs, including cropping and deskewing, and apply OCR when possible.
Upload files and metadata to Internet Archive page turner for public viewing.
QC e-book online, create tables of contents as appropriate.
Upload archival files to local server and create copies of TIFFs to be sent to project partners at UPenn.
Update OCLC record, overlaying existing Voyager record, create resolver URLs and holdings records for electronic book; test all links to records and perform QC on final electronic books to make sure links are operational, appearance of e-book is acceptable
Other duties as assigned
High school diploma and/or its equivalent required.
Reading of printed and hand-written of Arabic required.
Experience and demonstrated ability to work with and process digital images and files and basic proficiency with Excel required.
Basic proficiency in Photoshop required.
Familiarity and comfort with spreadsheet programs (e.g. Excel) and image editing software (preferably Photoshop) required.
Ability to work with ease in digital platforms and make improvements both at the command line and via use of graphic user interface.
Good all-around computer skills.
Ability to judge visual quality of digital images, good eye for detail.
Ability to work independently with highly technical, complex sets of tasks.
Ability to carry, push and lift up to 30 lb. boxes and transfer large numbers of heavy boxes from one place to another.
Bachelor's degree preferred.
Experience either scanning or working with scanned images in a library setting preferred.
Basic knowledge of XML preferred.
Ability to read Persian preferred.
Experience working in libraries, and familiarity with OCLC Connexion, cataloging standards, and bibliographic description preferred.
Familiarity with metadata standards and structure mapping; experience working with HTML.
