Career Counselor (SSP III) / Career Development Center California State University, San Bernardino
Employment Status: Permanent / Probationary & Temporary 'non-exempt' positions (with the possibility of the full-time positions converting to probationary)

Typical Activities Under the general direction of the Director of the Career Center, the incumbent will serve as a career counselor in a centralized comprehensive center to individuals and groups of students and alumni at the San Bernardino Campus. Conducts career assessments, gathers career information, performs job searches, and assists clients with identifying and evaluating graduate school options. Conducts comprehensive intake interviews assisting students/alumni with resume development, interviewing skills, job search and self-assessment. Prepares students/alumni for interviews and supports students/alumni at campus and campus-sponsored career events through experiences such as mock interviews and development of an 'elevator pitch' and assists with soft skills development. Provides career guidance utilizing assessment tools and provides feedback based on the results. Researches labor-market/career trends and creates information resources for client use. Collects online materials and hands-on resources including: labor market information, employer information, directories, resource guides, career path options, corporate annual reports, policies, products and services. Introduces client to the newest career information via the internet and other software options. Maintains resources for client use, by keeping abreast of the latest recruiting trends and specific needs for a wide variety of industries. Develops, coordinates and delivers training and skill development workshops to individuals and groups related to career readiness such as resume preparation, job-search strategies, and career information technology including internet links, interview skills and experiential learning preparation. Promotes client engagement in classroom, co-curricular experiences and community based learning activities that contribute to career planning and preparation. Serve as an expert regarding traditional resumes, co-curricular resumes, vitaes, cover letters, thank-you letters, letters of reference and statements of purpose formats and content. Provides guidance about internships and collaborates with internship coordination staff.
Under general supervision of the Career Center Director, the incumbent will proactively and strategically identify and build relationships with regional, state, national and international employers for recruitment of university students and alumni for the San Bernardino Campus. The incumbent will work closely with the Career Center internship team and campus internship coordinators to identify and promote internship opportunities for students. The incumbent will also identify and cultivate relationships with organizations and business sectors that will increase employer and student engagements to explore internship, volunteer, and job opportunities to enhance career readiness. The incumbent will seek to connect these entities with the appropriate resources and personnel at the Career Center. The incumbent will work with Employer Relations to identify student job and/or internship opportunities such as; on-campus recruitment programs including coordination of schedules for information sessions, information tables and on campus interviews at the San Bernardino Campus. The incumbent will continuously match business and industry needs to best support and prepare students for future career paths. The incumbent will identify opportunities for employers to facilitate career readiness workshops for intentional engagement between employer and student. Under the supervision of the Career Center Director, the incumbent will manage communication content and frequency for students and alumni of employer events both on and off campus.
The incumbent will work with campus partners to promote student involvement in national conferences that are student focused and present research, internship and career opportunities to CSUSB students. Examples of such conferences would include Society for Advancement of Hispanics/Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) or Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU). The incumbent will work with faculty and staff at both the San Bernardino and Palm Desert campuses to develop a resource on the Career Center's website where students can easily find such opportunities. For career and employer related events held by other campus colleges, student organizations or departments, including, but not limited to the Office of Development, alumni groups and college-based career services offices, the incumbent will partner and provide expertise, coordination and employer support as needed.
The incumbent will compile and report data on career readiness activities assess student-learning outcomes and provide feedback on the effectiveness of such efforts (using Handshake platform). The incumbent will track job market demand, trends in recruiting, job-offer data, and hiring results for students in their respective academic majors. The incumbent will also utilize the Career Center database (Handshake) to generate reports, analyze data and develop employer contact lists. Under general supervision of the Career Center Director, the incumbent will provide assistance in budget planning, strategic planning, goal setting, monthly and annual reports, etc. The incumbent will also attend administrative staff meetings and participate in professional development activities. The incumbent will perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Applicants must possess the equivalent to a Bachelor's degree and the equivalent to three years of professional experience, preferably in the areas of career counseling, internship coordination, service learning, volunteer recruitment, or human resources. Applicants must have a working knowledge of federal, state and local market regulations and business practices as it relates to internships and employment. Applicant must have employer relations/development experience with the ability to engage with local and regional communities and understanding of labor market trends. Applicants must have highly effective interpersonal communication skills. Applicants must have working knowledge of standard office software such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook. It is highly desired that this position have experience with assessment of student learning and student success. It is highly desired that the applicant have experience working with NACELink/Handshake Qualtrics, Blackboard or other project management and student contact software that will be utilized in this position. Applicant must have employer relations/development experience with the ability to engage with local and regional communities and understanding of labor market trends.
Preferred Education: Master's degree in counseling, sociology, psychology, or business administration. Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate course work in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.
Experience managing social media channels and MBTI certified is a plus. Supplemental Information
