The Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Foundation Relations develops and directs a comprehensive foundation relations program to secure and sustain leadership support for the priorities and long-term goals of the University.
Understand the strategic vision, goals, and priorities of Boston University and lead the effort to expand the philanthropic support from foundations to support those goals. Activities related to these efforts will include but not be limited to meeting with academic and institutional leaders (president, provosts, deans), meeting with faculty, reading strategic plans and other relate materials and attending academic functions.
Develop strategies for university priorities and staff university leadership, to include the president, provost and deans, in meeting with potential funders.
Identify potential foundation partners. Serve as primary development officer for a portfolio of top university foundation prospect and manage this portfolio through all phases of the development process: Initiate, design, and execute strategies for assigned foundations based on capacity for support, existing relations with Boston University, and alignment of university and foundation priorities.
Direct staff to work closely with faculty to compose, edit, and/or coordinate written materials, including proposals and budgets, in support of foundation solicitations. Direct staff to coordinate briefings for visits, on campus or at foundation offices, for appropriate university representatives, including presidents, provost, deans, and faculty, and debrief and follow up on such visits.
Mentor staff on advising faculty on foundation prospects and strategies for their research and other projects. Provide coaching and direct assistance in implementing strategies and proposal writing and preparation.
Develop programs to assist faculty and staff identify potential foundation funders for projects that have been approved by chairs, directors, and deans, including university-wide priorities and multidisciplinary initiatives.
Candidates must have ten or more years of experience, a doctorate degree is preferred. Additionally, demonstrated ability to develop strategic, proactive relationships with foundations as well as identify foundation interests and match them with university priorities and faculty projects
Demonstrated ability to work successfully with faculty across a broad range of academic disciplines and to translate and shape complex research projects and university priorities into compelling fundraising proposals.
Experience in the sciences strongly preferred
Experience as a former faculty member a plus
Knowledge of program design and budget creation for foundation proposals.
Exceptional communication skills
Exceptional judgment and tact.
Strong strategic, analytical, and project management skills
