Department: STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS - 061024 Department Description: Strategic Communications provides comprehensive and coordinated campus leadership in developing, planning, creating and implementing strategic communications programs based on the department's goals and objectives. The department works across all media to foster increased awareness, understanding and support of UC Davis' mission, vision, accomplishments, impacts and needs among its many internal and external constituencies. It serves as the official voice of UC Davis to regional, state, national and internal news media. Strategic Communications encompasses six units: Visual Communications, News and Media Relations, Web Communications, Social Media, Brand Management and Marketing, and Undergraduate Admissions Marketing. Strategic Communications' multimedia storytellers, writers, social media practitioners, designers, web developers, information architects, and search engine experts have a mission to communicate university messages through interactive media. We coordinate these communications across platforms to reach our audiences. Our efforts can be seen on ucdavis.edu, Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and other sites and channels.

Job Summary: Under the direction of the Director of Visual Communications, coordinate and produce complex multimedia projects as assigned. Collaborate with members of Strategic Communications including the news team, social media team, web team and marketing team, as well as other key campus partners. Plan and write scripts, or execute scripts written by others. Develop project briefs and storyboards. Create videos for digital distribution, including incorporating still and motion graphics, and edit still photos for print and digital. Mentor staff in creating multimedia stories and advise on strategic usage of multimedia on digital platforms for effective integrated marketing and communications. Lead video trainings for other communicators on campus. Use the Visual Communication's video studio to produce content. Advise on equipment purchasing. Help manage the campus video archive. Keep current with video editing, photo editing and digital technologies and analytics tools. Serve as a backup photographer.
Physical Demands: Ability to see the full color spectrum of light and visually color-correct images with a high degree of accuracy.
Sit at computer for extended periods of time.
Lift objects up to 25 pounds, to include camera equipment, to various locations to conduct photographic shoots.
Work Environment: Work occasional weekends, evenings, and during news events. Regular travel on and occasionally beyond the UC Davis campus.

Minimum Qualifications: Significant demonstrated experience as a visual storyteller. Experience in documentary style video production.
Experience in producing videos, from concept to completion, including expert level video shooting using DSLR and ENG video cameras, with cine lenses.
Expert level post production skills, including logging and editing, color-correcting, exporting multiple file types for different platforms, and sound sweetening, location scouting, working with non-professional talent, securing talent releases.
Experience using After Effects and other platforms to create compelling, story-driven motion graphics.
Experience creating video in a studio setting, including the use of live switchers, multicamera storytelling, and green screen video production.
Experience working in a deadline-driven environment.
Initiative to propose and complete communication projects independently, and experience working cooperatively and productively as a team leader or member.
Understanding of functions and limitations of YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms.
Knowledge of computer databases and the ability to learn to operate new databases and Internet services for generating and distributing information and for storing, retrieving and disseminating multimedia files.
Demonstrated experience in training others in video, photography and related editing technologies.
Time management skills. Skills to handle multiple projects under strict deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience using lighting equipment to create a variety of looks in challenging locations.
Experience using multiple audio tools for sound capture, including wireless lav mics, boom mics, on-camera mics.
Experience writing scripts for short form documentary-style video productions, industrials, and promo videos, all from a journalism point-of-view.
Experience creating storyboards, project briefs and scripts for a variety of purposes.
Photography skills to produce quality photos consistently under a variety of lighting conditions.
Experience using Photoshop to edit photos for digital and print usage. Knowledge of the academic and research enterprises and skills in deciphering technical research information and findings, and in providing multimedia products that help communicate this information to the news media, campus community and University Communications' specific audiences.
Ability to work collaboratively with writers, editors, print and Web designers, and other key staff members to produce top quality content.
Ability to quickly learn and master new computer applications and technologies, and to problem-solve, communicate and teach complex technological skills to other staff members and student interns.
Ability to organize and maintain multimedia and photography materials online.
Understanding of the structure, culture and mission of higher education institutions (with a particular emphasis on UC Davis) and the mission of University Communications.
