The role of this position is to support book sales by working to ensure that our titles are well-represented broadly in the media and within specific interest groups related to each book. Work includes proactive and creative cultivation of media relationships around Ohio University Press and Swallow Press books. Extensive copywriting for catalogs and marketing collateral. Obtain blurbs from prominent scholars and writers. Prepare manuscripts for transmittal from acquisitions to production. Train and supervise student workers. Generate a lively social media presence that meets readers and scholars where they are. In all work, balance and meet deadlines.
This work takes place within five general areas: 1. Publicity and Media Relationships Utilizing work completed for comparable titles, media databases, the author's marketing questionnaire, and experience as a reader, pitch seasonal lists to media and compose advance reader and review copy lists. Fulfill media requests. Complete media plans for new books and coordinate the completion of associated activities. Occasional travel to present seasonal lists.
2. Writing and Communication Under strict and frequent deadlines, draft and route seasonal catalog copy, book cover copy, and text for marketing collateral. Work with editors to obtain blurbs that convey the relevance and stature of the book. Generate and maintain a lively social media presence that meets scholars and readers where they are. Advise authors on best practices for self-promotion using social media. Align social media with the activities of the press and authors. Coordinate social media presence, including podcast and blog with activities of the press and authors.
3. Manuscript Preparation Complete checklist for 5-7 manuscripts a year to ensure all elements are present and as the author intended. Ensure applicable permissions are obtained. Work with authors as needed to finalize the manuscript. Prepare descriptions of projects under consideration in advance of editorial board meetings; proofread materials for editors.
4. Student Workers Participate in the hiring, training, and supervision of student workers to ensure quality work product and positive learning outcomes.
5. Exhibits and Conferences With support from marketing staff, prepare exhibit materials and book lists and ensure that materials arrive on timelines specified by each exhibit.
Combination of education and experience equivalent to B.A. in English, Communications, Marketing, or related field with at least one year of work experience in an office environment.
Must possess confident skill in written and oral communication and sensitivity to tone in addressing different constituencies. This position requires familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite and with the use of online databases.
