Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Communications Specialist II for the NJ Center on Gun Violence Research within the School of Public Health. The Center on Gun Violence Research seeks to create safe and healthy environments for NJ residents to live, learn, work, and play by providing high-quality, multi-disciplinary research on gun violence causality and prevention and translate this research into clear and actionable policies and programs. The center partners with relevant local-, state-and national-level experts, securing access to data to conduct and support research that identifies etiologic factors for gun violence, develops and rigorously evaluates interventions to reduce the burden of gun violence, and translates science into effective programs and policies to ensure their widespread adoption.
The Communications Specialist II will be responsible for executing the Center's communication and engagement strategy and developing written content for distribution. Applicant must be comfortable with social media applications and website management. This position is 100% grant-funded and located in Piscataway, NJ.
Develops and implements the Center's communication strategy.
Provides expertise and guidance on how to grow and engage our various stakeholders: policymakers, local organizations, community members, the Rutgers community etc.
Develops clear and accessible language for messaging through Op-Eds, articles, research/policy briefs, blog posts, etc.
Writes and edits website and social media content.
Promotes Center publications in partnership with the Rutgers Communications Department and the SPH Communications Department to secure placements among top-tier print and electronic outlets.
Monitors news outlets to identify and capitalize upon media and advocacy opportunities.
Tracks all media coverage and identify promotion opportunities.
Creates innovative visual and audio content for digital distribution as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Communication, Marketing or a related field.
Two (2) years of related experience
Equivalent experience, education and/or training may be substituted for the education requirements.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Able to work independently and in teams.
Excellent organization, planning, project management, and problem solving skills.
Must have professional writing experience, familiarity with audio/video production, a solid knowledge of the current social media landscape (twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube) and WordPress training.
Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Able to work effectively under pressure of deadlines.
Demonstrated knowledge, skill, and understanding of website management and publishing, social media management and digital marketing reporting.
Experience at an institution of higher education or a research center.

PHYSICALDEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, talking or hearing. No special vision requirements. Must be able to lift or exert force up to 25 pounds.
