The Digital Agriculture Innovations Team within the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at Iowa State University is accepting applications for an Engineer II or III who will provide technical leadership to engineering research projects in advanced machinery engineering. The ISU Digital Agriculture Innovation Team (www.isudigitalag.org) consists of professional staff and graduate students who work closely with agricultural industry partners to develop innovative technology solutions for agriculture. The team has a strong innovation record with over 25 patents and licensed technologies.
This position will provide key technical leadership for the design and implementation of software and control systems, data acquisition, testing, data analysis, and reporting associated with sponsored research in the field of advanced machinery engineering. These responsibilities include providing leadership in electronic system integration, prototype software and hardware design, field test design and execution, validation of sensors and data collection, and analysis of complex data. Contributing to the management of project scope, schedule, and resources will also be a responsibility of this position. Significant interactions with industrial project sponsors is anticipated.
The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to work independently; complete projects within a specified timeline; meet project design criteria; communicate effectively with design team members; and ensure a safe working environment for project staff. It is essential that the candidate have agricultural knowledge and a familiarity with machinery and electronic systems used in agricultural row crop production. The successful candidate will possess strong problem solving skills and the ability to apply advanced knowledge of agricultural machinery systems and row crop production to machinery automation. The ideal candidate will possess effective time management skills; excellent communication and organizational skills; and be detail oriented. The candidate will also be a motivated self-starter and possess the ability to thoroughly conduct, document, and communicate research methods and results within project deadlines and budgets. Flexible scheduling during peak project periods is expected.

In addition to the duties above the Engineer III responsibilities include the ability to design and execute field test plans, knowledge of agriculture machinery GPS, instrumentation and CAN bus systems, and machinery data statistical analysis and reporting skills. Required minimum qualification for the Engineer III is Bachelorâs degree and 3 years of related experience; OR a Masterâs degree and 1 year of related experience. The Engineer III is a P35.
