The Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Cancer Center is the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Indiana and one of just 51 in the nation. The comprehensive designation recognizes the IU Simon Cancer Center's added depth and breadth of basic science and clinical research as well as population and prevention studies, education activities, and community outreach across the state.
The IU Simon Cancer Center is searching for a driven communications professional who has the ability to take scientific information related to oncology research and translate it into content accessible to a wide variety of audiences. The Science Writer is responsible for developing, packaging, and promoting internal and external communications designed to create awareness of the work of IU Simon Cancer Center researchers, thus, enhancing the center's reputation. An important component of the position is to proactively bring ideas for content and related assets and determine timing to further enhance engagement and visibility.
Duties and Responsibilities Include:
Interact with cancer researchers to identify possible stories and provide an honest assessment of the newsworthiness of potential research stories, providing alternatives to traditional news releases when those stories are deemed of lesser interest to news media. Develop engaging, easy-to-understand content for multiple target audiences with varying levels of knowledge and expertise.
Conceptualize, develop and guide the creation of engaging content for various audiences through a variety of internal and external communications channels. Those channels include the cancer center's e-letter (10 issues per year), news releases, blog posts, social media, videos, annual scientific report, and short-, medium-, and long-form copy for websites among others. Determine communications strategy and the best venues, including traditional and non-traditional media, for news and information.
Miscellaneous communications support, including but not limited to editing, researching, media monitoring and reporting, content distribution, content development and strategy for the promotion of social media communications.
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, public relations, public health, or a related field and three years of demonstrated experience and proven skills in journalism, communications, public relations and media relations.

Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Strong news judgment and deadline oriented. Ability to understand medical and scientific language. Ability to read through scientific studies, published research and abstracts and interview experts to communicate the significance of the research for a lay audience. Demonstrated project development and project management skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks and turn stories around quickly. Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment with multiple complex projects running concurrently. Experience working independently as well as collaboratively while maintaining accountability.
