The Senior Network Engineer reports to the Director Network Services and will manage projects, including time, resources, and labor across different departments, for the design, administration and management of all data, Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), and wireless networks across the Middle Tennessee State University campus. Design, install, maintain, troubleshoot, and document network infrastructure. Maximize network performance by monitoring performance, troubleshooting network problems and outages, scheduling upgrades, and collaborating with network architects on network optimization. Enhance job knowledge through participation in educational opportunities, reading professional publications, and participating in professional organizations. Research and implement approved new technologies to increase network performance, reliability, and functionality. Develop technology roadmaps by testing new and modified network configurations and new/upgraded hardware and software. Develop plans for implementation, integration, cost and timeline for updating new and existing technologies. Perform detailed analysis of traffic flows and patterns identifying and resolving performance, scalability and availability issues. Report network operational status by gathering, prioritizing, and formatting data to inform management of current status and applicable trends. Perform other related tasks and special projects as assigned.
Knowledge: - thorough knowledge of Ethernet networks and 802.11 wireless networks thorough knowledge of the OSI Model - thorough knowledge of routers, switches, access points, gateways and Network Access Control
Abilities: - demonstrable expertise implementing and supporting enterprise information technology services such as DNS, DHCP, IPAM, VDI, SANS - demonstrable experience implementing and supporting enterprise information technology protocols such as VoIP, SIP, BGB, OSPF, RIP, 802.11 - prior experience managing Windows (current), Linux, and MacOS systems/servers - express ideas clearly and concisely - establish and maintain effective working relations with diverse constituencies - proper use of packet sniffers and other network analysis tools
Bachelor’s degree preferably in computer science, computer information systems, mathematics or a related field.
Note: An Associates degree preferably in computer science, computer information systems, mathematics or a related field and seven years’ experience as defined may be considered in lieu of the bachelor’s degree requirement.
Five (5) years progressively responsible demonstrated experience in network design and support and experience in configuring and maintaining a diverse enterprise network required. Experience to include TCP/IP, Ethernet, VRRP, VLANs, and data center architectures including SAN support required.
Eight years’ experience in area listed to include two years of supervisory/project management experience preferred.
