Orrick currently has an exciting opportunity for a Chief Practice Officer (CPO) for our Corporate Business Unit. This position will be located in any of our U.S. Offices.

The Corporate Chief Practice Officer (“CPO”) is a member of the firm’s Executive Staff, the senior staff management team who collectively support the Board and the Management Committee in achieving the firm’s strategy. The Corporate CPO will be a senior business partner to the Corporate Business Unit Leader (“BUL”) and the Corporate Practice Groups’ Leaders (PGLs), as well as the Tech Sector Lead, in developing and executing on the BU, PG and Tech Sector priorities in support of the firm’s strategy. The firm’s Corporate practice groups include M&A and PE, Capital Markets, Technology Companies Group, Compensation & Benefits, Tax and Cyber & Privacy Advisory and Compliance.
Strategic Planning and Execution:
Work with firm, sector and BU leadership to achieve the firm’s strategy around being the global leader in the Tech sector
Work with BUL and PGLs to create and implement the Corporate Business Unit and Corporate Practice Groups’ strategic business plan(s). Monitor business plan performance throughout the year and suggest proactive measures to achieve business plan priorities.
Work collaboratively with BUL, PGL’s and firm’s administrative team to achieve the goals of the business unit and the firm, including revenue generation, cross-practice and cross office collaboration.
Be deeply knowledgeable about the market and client opportunities and act as trusted advisor to the Sector, Business Unit and Practice Leaders, and to the partners in the Business Unit.
Monitor practice group, client and partner profitability and other practice management metrics. Identify issues and work directly with partners and leaders to address opportunities.
Utilize profitability and matter management tools in counseling lawyers on client selection, matter management and staffing issues.
Work with BULs and PGLs to develop and manage annual revenue and expense budgets.
Manage the billing and collections process for the Business Unit.
Maintain a consistent dialogue with billing attorneys and the billing and collections staff and work closely with billing attorneys to resolve issues.
Prepare collections projections and analyses in Q4. Support the Management Committee and the BULs in achieving annual revenue targets.
Work with BUL, PGLs and Chief Growth and Integration Officer to develop and execute on lateral recruiting and integration strategies for the Corporate BU.
Assist in recruiting effort and financial analyses of individual lateral partners and groups of attorneys.
Play a lead role in the successful transitioning and integrating of newly hired lateral partners.
Analyze partner performance and participate in the partner review/compensation process
Monitor utilization and work with recruiting and professional development teams on recruiting non-partner attorneys as well as managing underperforming non-partner attorneys.
Work with PGLs and Assigning Partners to ensure that the group's assignment process allocates opportunities efficiently and fairly among associates.
Internal Communication and Leadership:
Work to ensure that attorneys in business unit and practice groups are meeting and communicating regularly and effectively on issues relating to practice development, business development, associate management, and financial performance issues.
Assist the Corporate BUL with preparing and providing regular reports on the strategy and performance of the Corporate BU.
Organize regular BU and PGL and practice group meetings.
Attend meetings and present on various topics relating to financial performance and management issues.
Lead development of business unit and practice group retreats from a substantive and operational standpoint.

Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university. Law degree and/or MBA preferred.
Ten to fifteen years of experience in legal or professional services administration, with seven years of experience in a senior management capacity, relating to:
Finance including accounting principles, law firm pricing strategies, and professional services practice management approaches
Efficient and effective project management relating to business systems, financial management and human resources.
Demonstrated analytical and operational skills.
Excellent executive-level leadership and communication skills.
Ability to develop and cultivate strong professional working relationships with diverse colleague group.
Ability to engender motivation and confidence in all members of the firm.
