The Beijing Institute of Collaborative Innovation (BICI) has partnered with the University of Michigan (UM) to establish the U-M-BICI Collaboratory to support a long term and sustainable education and research collaboration through the effective management of sponsored education and research projects. Through international collaborative innovation, the Collaboratory aims to create collaborative, open, dynamic and competitive education and research environment. The ultimate goal is to make the Collaboratory a world-class education and research institute with global influence and a hotbed for technologies, intellectual properties and prototypes that could be licensed or transferred to industry. The Collaboratory is guided by a Management Committee and is led by co-directors who are assisted by two assistant directors.
The Assistant Director (AD) will work with the director and Management Committee to:
Setup an education program among BICI, Peking University (PKU) and UM
Recruit students to study under the Collaboratory
Identification, initiation and manage education and research projects
Engage faculty at UM, PKU and other institutions who are interested in partnering with BICI in education and research and innovation
Maintain knowledge of university faculty and research interests, capabilities and activities in education and research
Assist the Directors and Management Committee in education and research project selection, initiation, management and evaluation
Work with other UM units on regulatory, compliance and other related issues related to education and research
Assist with knowledge/technology transfer from the Collaboratory to industry
Sponsor and Industry Relations
Serve as a primary point of contact for Collaboratory inquiries and requests from internal and external constituents on education
Interact with student, faculty, and industry to expand education and research collaboration
Travel between the United States and China, with the possibility of additional international travel activities
Interact with BICI and BICI USA on all Collaboratory related education and research activities
Meetings and Events
Organize meetings, visits, events and workshops that promote and support partnership and collaboration in education and research
Initiate and conduct regular meetings of the Management Committee
At least of 5 years of experience in managing projects in research and innovation,
Has a broad understanding of engineering, and the innovation processes,
The ability to become conversant with many different specific scientific and technology areas in education and research through reading, interviews, and interaction with expert team members,
Excellent organizational, written and verbal communication skills,
Ability to set priorities,
Ability to interact effectively with a wide variety of people,
Knowledge of the regulations (especially related to intellectual property and export controls),
Experience in public speaking and facilitating large meetings,
Relentless drive and exceptional strengths in administrative and project management functions, and
Enthusiasm, intellectual curiosity, and self-motivation.
Ph.D. degree in science, engineering or business,
Proven technical and/or business experience in innovation or entrepreneurship, and
Fluency in speaking and writing English and Chinese.
Product development experience in large corporations or start-ups.
Previous angel investment experience is high desired.
Have broad industry and academic network.
This is a two-year appointment with opportunity for renewal.
