The Software Engineer is part of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine’s Registrar’s Office, and is responsible for the Registrar’s Office database and other information systems that supports the efficient and effective operations of the office. The Registrar’s Office has a number of customers who rely on the data in the Registrar’s Office database: customers include but are not limited to the Registrar, the Registrar’s Office staff, School of Medicine deans, staff, faculty, administrators. The Registrar’s Office database is shared with the Office of Faculty Information (OFI); the Software Engineer will work with the OFI Software Engineer to coordinate project development and maintain system integrity.
The Software Engineer reports to the Associate Dean and Registrar. The Office of Information Technology provides additional project management and data integration support on specific projects.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
The Software Engineer supports the technology needs of the Registrar’s Office. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Manage and complete multiple medium- to large-sized projects
Work with the Associate Dean and Registrar, and Registrar’s Office customers, to gather requirements and provide guidance for the direction of projects.
Plan, design, create, implement, maintain, provide production support to, and document Registrar’s Office database systems. Manage user setup, installation, and general training on the database.
Manage the full range of the development life cycle including but not limited to detailed software specification, installation, modification, system and module level design and programming, testing, documentation and user training.
Apply analysis techniques and procedures to gather and then translate business requirements into functional/technical specifications and designs
Maintain databases and application system code including user maintenance and job scheduling
Meet with users to identify opportunities for process improvements
Work with the Associate Dean and Registrar on web-based projects integrating internal databases with other offices in order to fulfill their data requirement needs
Evaluate expanded use of SharePoint for existing business functions; configure and design processes for migration to onBase.
Serve on Student Information System committees; test software as technical representative of Registrar’s Office.
Research existing technology and evaluate its use for new applications
Identify areas for process improvement
Analyze, design, develop, implement, document, maintain and train users on process enhancements.
Resolve production issues and ad hoc data requests as they arise.
Serve as a source of technical knowledge within the Registrar’s Office; develop and maintain expert level knowledge of the systems and processes used by the Registrar’s Office; gain familiarity with new technologies (such as SharePoint, OnBase, New Innovations, Zoom, etc.)
Serve as a liaison with the network office and University Information Technology to escalate Registrar’s Office user issues as appropriate.
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five years related experience.
Five (5) years related experience.
Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job. *
Experience in higher education preferred
Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Strong SQL Server skills (creating tables, stored procedures and views, managing users and permissions, scheduling jobs)
Strong skills in Access and Visual Basic for applications programming (connection statements, file creation, email automation)
Expert knowledge of Access and Excel; experience creating ad hoc and standing reports;
experience using SSRS, OnBase, and SharePoint
Demonstrated ability to identify process improvements; gather requirements; and to develop, test, document and maintain solutions
Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and to self-manage
Demonstrated ability to quickly become familiar with new technology
Strong critical thinking and analytical reasoning skills

Experience in .net (c#) programming a plus
