This position The Director of the Office of Research Development (ORD) initiates and oversees a diverse portfolio of research development support, working closely with faculty and administration across schools at Northwestern to promote and interdisciplinary research programs. ORD supports the research enterprise across Northwestern by: identifying and disseminating funding opportunities; managing the Institutional Limited Submission process; facilitating collaborations and interdisciplinary teams; providing project managements and programmatic support for the development of multi-million dollars, interdisciplinary grant proposals.
Initiates, facilitates and directs large, complex interdisciplinary proposal development to federal agencies across all research fields in the university; oversees the project management support and programmatic and strategic development of center-, consortium-, and cooperative grant proposals.
Advises faculty on single- and multi-investigator grants on strategic approaches to developing competitive proposals to federal funding agencies, including on the interpretation of funding opportunities and the suitability of projects for specific opportunities.
Reviews, writes and provide developmental edits for large proposals.
Works with the Office of Government Relations and fosters relationships with key individuals at funding agencies to gain access to new and evolving research priorities and funding programs; Catalyzes program development in response to the funding landscape and new research directions.
Leads the Institutional Limited Submissions process, which results in the selection and nomination of outstanding investigators to submit proposals for awards that the sponsor limited the number of applicants from any given institution.
Oversees the identification and targeted dissemination of funding opportunities.
Directs all ORD operations; including supervision of an Associate Director and an Administrative Assistant.
Develops and presents university-wide workshops on proposal development and preparation.
Collaborates with Research Deans, Department Chairs, and senior Office for Research leadership on strategy and process of research development.
Works with AVP for Research to develop 5 year ORD Strategic Plan.
Performs other duties as assigned.
PhD in engineering or sciences.
5 years’ experience in research/research administration/research development.
2-3 years management experience.

Knowledge of major federal sponsors’ rules and regulations; experience working on large center grants or cooperative agreements.
