The Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for the position of Junior Specialist. Under the direction of Associate Professor Jarmila Pittermann, the Junior Specialist will participate in several research projects concerned with plant adaptation to their habitat, drought response, and functional anatomy. The majority of the work will be performed at UCSC, but the position may require the Specialist to travel briefly to the Sierras and/or Bakersfield.
The ideal candidate must consistently be self-motivated, follow verbal and written instruction, follow protocols accurately, employ strong interpersonal communication and decision-making skills, and successfully work independently and as part of a diverse team of students, researchers and professionals from UCSC and other universities and agencies.
Applicants with most of the following areas of expertise are strongly encouraged to apply: Proficiency in measuring xylem hydraulic conductivity in angiosperms, conifers, and ferns using the centrifuge, bench-top and air-injection methods; Expert plant anatomy skills including generating thin sections with and without a microtome, proper staining and mounting, preparing leaf dissections, digital image capture using state of the art microscopes, and expedient quantitative image analysis; Experience in field data collection including measurements of photosynthesis, chlorophyll, leaf pressure-volume relationships and leaf water potential; Proficiency in data curation and data analysis; Experienced in appropriate field and lab protocols; Plant ecophysiology experience in the California flora; and/or a publication record in the field
ACADEMIC TITLE Junior Specialist
SALARY Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
A bachelor's degree or higher (or equivalent foreign degree) in Biology, Botany, or Environmental Sciences, with a focus in plant hydraulics, anatomy, and field ecophysiology at time of application.
At least one-year, post-graduation, research lab experience.
POSITION AVAILABLE As soon as possible after initial review of the applications.
DURATION OF POSITION Initial appointment will be fulltime for three months, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
