The Senior Web Developer works as part of a multidisciplinary web team within the Office of Public Affairs to develop and support websites built on WordPress. Specifically, this role is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the university’s primary WordPress themes and plugins and email templates, all of which are to be strategically aligned with the business goals and communications objectives of the university and its schools and programs. This position will report to the Director of Web Development.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Creates new web solutions to meet functional and brand needs of the university using modern web standards and best practices���������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������������
Build and maintain websites of all types; develop, test, debug, document, and implement new WordPress themes and plugins
Collaborate closely with web designers, other web developers, quality assurance, and project managers
Provides technical support for, and regular updates and enhancements to, the university’s primary WordPress themes and plugins and email templates.
Researches new web solutions based on emerging trends and best practices.
Ensure adherence to departmental standards
Act as a source of direction, training, and guidance
Work closely with web team project managers, and participate in team discussions and decisions regarding project direction and technical solutions

Undergraduate degree plus 3 years of experience OR equivalent combination of education and experience
Experience developing in PHP, which requires integration with databases such as MySQL
Experience with WordPress, Linux/Apache, MacOS, and Windows
Proficient in the use of Git or other version control system
Knowledge of current web standards, design standards, and web best practices
Experience employing standard practices with regard to the application development lifecycle
Experience in working with development, test, and production environments
Demonstrated aptitude for application development using object-oriented, web-based languages
5+ years professional experience in developing websites using open source technology
Prior experience in a higher education technology environment
Experience or training using web content management systems such as WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, etc.
Background in Interface Design and/or a demonstrated understanding of working effectively with web designers
Experience working with modern front-end tools/frameworks like SASS, CSS postprocessors, jQuery, React/Backbone, Grunt/Gulp/webpack, and others
Experience writing custom server side applications in PHP, including writing code to interface with data in an SQL database like MySQL
Comfort using command line tools and virtual environments
Contributions to open source projects
Experience setting up and modifying web server configurations in Apache or Nginx
Experience Integrating with web APIs like REST and SOAP
Experience with LAMP (Linux/Apache/MySQL/PHP) web development
Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to web standards and professionalism
Experience working in a fast-paced environment and the ability to prioritize and self-manage multiple projects simultaneously
Demonstrated aptitude to quickly and effectively adapt to new circumstances and technologies
Experience with use of business applications in web-based environments
Ability to estimate coding efforts
Strong desire to develop new technical knowledge and professional skills on a continual basis
Excellent organizational and communication skills, both verbal and written
Ability to work and communicate effectively with team members and campus partners

Applicant Special Instructions:
This work will require being on call on evenings and weekends. It may require working a significant number of weekends. It will occasionally require travel to on and off-campus locations.
The hiring range for this position is $55,000 - $63,000 annually.
