The Middle and Upper Learning Librarian provides the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the library program in the Middle and Upper levels is aligned with the mission, goals, and objectives of The Galloway School, and is an integral component of the learning/instructional program, seeking new and inventive ways to bring members of the community into the library and library concepts and resources to the community.
The Middle and Upper Learning Librarian understands Galloway’s mission to draw students joyfully into learning and oversees a library program that is engaging and challenging to all students (Pre-K to grade 12), faculty, and the Galloway community. The Middle and Upper Learning Librarian partners with the Early Learning Librarian to support Galloway’s mission and ensure that programming is appropriately scaffolded Pre-K to grade 12.
PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES Leadership ? Create an environment conducive to active and participatory learning, resource-based instructional practices, collaboration and creative problem-solving. ? Serve on decision-making teams in the school. ? Share expertise through presentations to different school constituencies. ? Maintain frequent and timely communication to stakeholders through all appropriate channels. ? Encourage the use of instructional technology to improve learning, providing universal access to digital information resources for the community. ? Collect and analyze data to improve instruction and student achievement. ? Maintain active memberships in professional associations. ? Remain current in professional practices and developments, information technologies, and educational research applicable to school library programs. ? With the support of the Library Coordinator, oversee and manage the Middle and Upper Learning Library budgets.
Instructional Partner and Teacher for Middle and Upper Learning ? Act as an instructional partner within the school to design and implement learning experiences that promote creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication. ? Collaborate with teachers, specialists and instructional staff to design and implement lessons and units of instruction, and assess student learning and instructional effectiveness. ? Participate in the implementation of collaboratively planned learning experiences by team teaching and providing group and individual instruction. ? Assist faculty in infusing technology resources into lessons. ? Join with teachers to plan and implement meaningful experiences that promote a love of reading. ? Guide students in reading for understanding, for exposure to a diversity of viewpoints, and for pleasure. ? Participate in the curriculum development process to ensure that the curricula include the full range of literacy skills (information, media, visual, digital, and technological literacy). ? Plan and provide professional development opportunities within the school and with all staff.
Information Specialist for Middle and Upper Learning ? Provide leadership and expertise in the selection, acquisition, evaluation, and organization of information resources and technologies in all formats, as well as proficiency in the ethical and judicious use of such information. ? Ensure equitable access and responsible use of library resources and organize the collection for maximum and effective use. ? Develop and maintain a collection of resources appropriate for Galloway’s students and faculty, including online databases, digital eBooks and audio collections, and print materials. ? Ensure that Galloway students and faculty learn responsible research practices and are able to evaluate sources, gather information, construct new knowledge, and communicate their findings. ? Evaluate, promote, and use existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning, supplement school resources, connect the school with the global learning community, communicate with students and teachers, and provide universal access to library services. ? Understand copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property, and assist users with their understanding and observance of the same.
Program Administrator for Middle and Upper Learning ? Establish the procedures and strategies of the Middle and Upper Learning library program and related activities, maximizing the efficiency and effectiveness of the library program. ? Oversee the library’s long-range strategic planning process and ensure that the library’s goals and objectives are aligned with Galloway’s strategic plan. ? Create and maintain a library environment for Middle and Upper Learning that is inviting, safe, and open to the community with all its diversity and learning styles. ? Ensure equitable access to the library facilities and information systems. ? Empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information. ? Develop and share collaboratively developed and up-to-date policies concerning such issues as material selection, circulation, reconsideration of materials, copyright, privacy, and acceptable use. ? Work with the Upper and MIddle Learning faculty to choose the summer reading selections and help with purchasing and distributing the books.
Other Duties ? Teach ML or UL class/es as needed.
? Oversee library-related clubs and activities. ex.) Reading Bowl ? Experience with video production and design is preferred.
