The Associate Director ,for Course Development will provide leadership and supervision of the Penn Engineering Online course development and delivery team. Reporting to the Director of Penn Engineering Online, the Associate Director, Course Development will serve as a resource and subject matter expert in developing innovative approaches to teaching and learning in the online environment. The Associate Director, Course Development will have direct responsibility for ensuring the quality of online offerings, making sure all courses are completed on time, within budget and up to university standards (including copyright and accessibility). Bringing an in-depth understanding of online course development processes, the Associate Director, Course Development will advise faculty, staff and other stakeholders on the development of learning experiences for high-profile programs, MCIT Online, and other online initiatives including for-credit, non-credit and blended online courses and programs.
Managing the day-to-day responsibilities associated with course development, the Associate Director, Course Development will supervise the course development areas of Penn Engineering Online Learning; which includes supervising online technology specialists, instructional designers, project managers and vendors. The Associate Director, Course Development will also work closely with the course technology and operations team, direct the transition from course development to deployment and work with the team to troubleshoot any issues that arise as part of the learning process. Additionally, the Associate Director, Course Development will stay abreast of current trends in online learning course design, delivery, research and evaluation and serve as a liaison to the larger instructional design community at Penn.
Serve as the Associate Director, Course Development responsible for leading the course development team. Specifically, manage the day-to-day operations of the course development and delivery team and including serving as abona fide supervisor to the Platform and Tech Specialist, future hires on this team, AppleOne temp employees and vendors. Have primary responsibility for maintaining deadlines, ensuring courses are completed on time and within budget and ensuring courses meet university standards (including copyright and accessibility).
Serve as the expert in online course development processes. Specifically, advise and lead faculty, staff and other stakeholders on the development of learning experiences for high-profile programs and initiatives including for-credit, non-credit and blended online courses and programs.
Direct the transition from development to delivery. Specifically, ensure a smooth transition by overseeing the final review process which includes a significant early evaluation and feedback cycle. Provide support to the course technology and operations team after a course is deployed by troubleshooting issues that arise as part of the learning process.
Direct the course evaluation effort which involves working with experts in learning analytics (external vendor hired by the Director and/or internal Penn experts) to develop an assessment process (summative and formative evaluations for course improvements). Specifically, using best practices in online education, develop and implement a strategy (approved by the Director) for continuous evaluation and improvement of the courses and overall learning experience. Provide regular reports to decision makers such as the Director of Online Learning, Program Directors and Senior Leadership.
Advise and work closely with other online learning staff on the development of high value marketing and PR communications for Penn Engineering Online Learning (video, blogs, articles). Provide and coordinate support from your team of staff and freelancers for these efforts. Approve final materials prior to distribution.
Serve as a liaison to the larger online course development community (internal and external) and stay abreast of current trends in online course design and delivery and facilitating the success and satisfaction of online learners.
Perform additional duties as assigned
A Bachelor's degree and 3-5 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. Experience in higher education online learning and project management is strongly preferred.
