The objective of this position is to direct the origination, structuring and marketing of a portfolio of innovative energy supply offerings incorporating the company’s existing hydro and thermal assets, wholesale market power as well as renewable projects to include wind, solar and energy storage. The Senior Director brings origination, negotiation and portfolio risk analytic skill sets to the development of supply offerings as well as the procurement of large scale renewable power contracts to drive New York State towards a fully decarbonized electricity sector by 2040, supporting NYPA’s customers’ desire for renewable energy as well as voluntary compliance with NY State’s Clean Energy Standard (RECs). The role is responsible for the strategic direction and marketing efforts for customers classes including Commercial and Industrial, Governmental, Municipalities and Coops, ESCOs and Community Choice Aggregators.
Responsible for resource assignments and deliverables supporting the Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer through the management of the Energy Supply team.
Manage team P&L and grow NYPA’s energy supply business including the design and marketing of new complex clean energy bundled products (including hydro, wind, solar and energy storage)
Lead market analysis and structuring of products that are aligned with short term and long term objectives and NYPA’s mission; working in close collaboration with the wholesale trading group (Energy Resource Management), Enterprise Risk and Finance.
Work in collaboration with Energy Resource Management and Enterprise Risk to propose and approve, respectively, risk management strategies in order to optimize, model and manage NYPA’s wholesale portfolio.
Conduct large scale renewable RFPs and negotiate Purchase Power Agreement terms on behalf of NYPA and the Customer; including supporting NYPA’s customers’ compliance with the Clean Energy Standard.
Coordinate with NYPA’s Key Account Managers to identify existing and new customers for our supply offers; develop and maintain trusted relationships with customers as part of marketing efforts.
Manage Contracts and Tariffs structuring team that supports NYPA’s low cost hydro economic development programs.
Direct the Annual Energy Supply planning activities and set annual and longer term objectives; aligned with NYPA’s fundamental mission and strategy.
Remain current with fundamental market conditions and drivers impacting the energy markets in North America
Leverage the Customer Account Center platform to improve customer service and interface around supply offerings.
Direct the planning, attraction, selection, retention, and development of staff to ensure the availability of the required management and professional talent.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Strong innovative commercial mindset
Demonstrated wholesale market trading experience, NYISO familiarity required; other other regional transmission organization experience preferred
Experience developing competitive fully bundled energy, capacity and renewable energy supply offerings
Experience in competitive power market analysis, fundamental economic analysis, competitor analysis and portfolio risk analytics
Experience formulating customer proposals and negotiating Purchase Power Agreements with Commercial & Industrial, governmental and muni-co-op customers
Experience responding to and conducting RFPs for Large Scale Renewables and negotiating subsequent purchase power agreements
Experience with Energy Commodity Risk Management platforms, including implementation and enhancements
Familiarity with NY energy policies and regulatory constructs, including the NY Clean Energy Standard
Ability to work collaboratively across functional groups and large organizations
Strong communication skills to introduce new business concepts and structures to senior executives and other internal and external stakeholders
Demonstrated ability to effectively lead teams to deliver results
Demonstrated ability working in an unstructured environment that is evolving to a faster moving, digital services business environment.
Education, Experience and Certifications
Bachelor’s Degree required. Business, finance, economics, engineering or technical field degree is preferred.
Advanced degree in, management, MBA, or a related field is preferred.
Minimum of 7 years in wholesale electricity markets including trading, power purchase agreement development and negotiation; NYISO experience required; other RTO experience preferred.
Minimum 5 years in origination, contract structuring, and marketing roles.
Minimum 5 years of experience managing staff.
Experience with renewable portfolio standards and similar mechanisms (e.g. NY Clean Energy Standard) preferred.
Experience working with customers (external and/or internal).
Ability and willingness to travel required (typically within NY State); 10% of the time is required.
