The Development Officer is a member of the ACT for Alexandria leadership team and will play an integral role in driving the success of an exciting period of growth and transformation for ACT. S/he will manage the development pipeline, staff the development committee, provide strategic oversight of development functions, and manage a portfolio of prospects and donors. The Development Officer will play a key role in supporting and guiding board activities, cultivating high-net-worth individuals, stewarding and recruiting donor advised fund holders, as well as foundation, corporate and government grants. The position reports to the President and CEO.
Fundraising: Manage a portfolio of key funding relationships and solicit gifts. Brief and prepare leadership to participate in meetings, execute on-site meetings, presentations, proposals, communications, and negotiations with donors— including current and prospective donors. Advise on the development of donor communications and materials including print and digital collateral and social media. Provide strategic guidance on ACT’s fundraising events. Develop a planned giving program.
Stewardship: Build a donor base by developing and maintaining key long-term relationships with funders through community outreach, accurate and regular reporting, and branding and marketing activities. Develop and execute a calendar of cultivation and stewardship activities.
Board of Directors Management: Support the CEO in stewarding and soliciting individual Board members, manage the Board’s Development Committee and liaise regularly with Development Chair, and manage a pipeline of prospective new Board members and support the Board in recruitment. Provide periodic fundraising trainings to Board of Directors.
Planning and Strategy: Plan the strategic direction of Development and create and execute an annual fundraising plan. Identify needed funds, strategic approaches, and preferred funding targets for individuals, foundations and corporations. Create fundraising projections and support the development of ACT’s annual budget.
Reporting and Tracking: Oversee the management of the donor pipeline and reporting through the database and other tools. Work with the Development Coordinator to provide regular reports to funders with updates on current status of funding activities. Regularly report to fellow Development Committee members and Board of Directors on fundraising milestones and metrics using dashboards from the database. Regularly assess ACT’s fundraising effectiveness and provide suggestions to strengthen performance.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS
4-6 years of fundraising experience for a nonprofit organization, including an effective track record in major gifts.
Demonstrated success in developing and executing effective cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies, including goal setting, progress monitoring and reporting.
Demonstrated success in soliciting and closing gifts from a variety of audiences.
Knowledge of donor advised funds and planned giving.
Demonstrated effectiveness working with Boards of Directors.
Strong communication skills and public presence, and excellent writing and presentation skills.
Strong team management skills; able to manage development professionals and provide strategic direction across the organization.
Good interpersonal skills; able to work with cross-functional teams and lead through influence.
Highly organized with excellent attention to detail; able to manage a number of diverse tasks, activities, and projects.
Flexible and adaptable; ability to perform well in an entrepreneurial environment.
Enthusiasm for ACT’s mission, vision and values.
Knowledge of MS Office Suite is required.
Willingness and ability to travel locally.
Experience and proficiency with databases, Donor Perfect a plus.
