The Communications Team within the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) provides communications and marketing support and services for all departments, programs and centers across the college.
Under the general direction of the Communications Manager, the Communications Specialist performs a variety of communications duties to ensure the success and efficiency of CAS communications operations. The Communications Specialist produces written content for all media. A high level of independent judgment, initiative and problem-solving skills are required.
Assists the Communications Manager in the general flow of all work requests for the CAS Communications Team, including regular compilation and reporting on project request data.
Monitors and traffics the Communications Team email inbox.
Working with members of the Communications Team, develops short-form content for a variety of print and digital marketing and communications outlets, including websites, social media platforms, and print publications.
Assists the CAS Communications Team in communications with stakeholders, including monthly digital communications for internal and external purposes.
Maintains CAS email mailing lists for external communications.
Provides backup support as needed for Dean’s communication activities, including quote requests, talking points, presentations and letters.
Coordinates workflow, production and distribution of CAS branded specialty items, and items ordered by CAS units.
Periodically provides photography support for event coverage for the purpose of posting on social media platforms.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Serves as a backup for staff as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, public relations, communications, or a related discipline and at least two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Working knowledge of public relations and communications tactics, including internal and external communications, presentation skills, events, and marketing communications.
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.
Knowledge of copy editing and proofreading, and familiarity with editorial style.
Effective organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to operate independently and to use sound judgment, initiative and discretion in all interactions with constituents.
Ability to communicate effectively and interact well with a wide range of professional colleagues.
Proficiency in Windows, Microsoft Office, and other electronic communication (newsletter and social media).
Experience and interest in creative use of social media and web content management systems preferred.
Knowledge of University academic programs, policies and procedures desirable.
Requires flexibility to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed
