The USC Iovine and Young Academy is seeking a Lab Specialist to provide technical expertise in the implementation and use of equipment in the student maker space. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the ideal candidate will have experience with spaces that house advanced or specialized classroom and maker space technologies and equipment, including 3D printers, laser cutters, desktop CNC machines and other light fabricating equipment. The Lab Specialist will advise and/or assist faculty, students and staff in the implementation and use of equipment and facilities and will guide and mentor students that are engaged in class projects.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES / JOB ACCOUNTABILITIES
Principal duties will include:
Provides specialized studio/laboratory/facility technical expertise to support faculty, students, and staff in the implementation and use of advanced classroom technologies and equipment, including but not limited to 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, etc.
Plans and coordinates lab exercises, lectures, and demonstrations with instructors and student services staff. Instructs students, staff, and/or instructors in the proper use of classroom equipment and materials.
Supervises the operation and maintenance of the student maker space. Provides advice on lab setup or design, equipment acquisition or enhancement, lab operation, monitoring, and maintenance.
Contributes to the development and implementation of lab policies and procedures. Ensures compliance with health and safety standards of operation.
Controls and monitors equipment and materials inventory. Approves supply orders and negotiates directly with vendors as appropriate.
Provides direction to lab assistants, including student workers. Assists in training and scheduling work assignments. Monitors work and provides performance feedback.
Schedules lab availability to meet the needs of students and faculty.
Monitors expenses for materials, supplies, repairs, maintenance, and project work.
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITY
Preferred Experience: 3-5 years in an additive/subtractive fabrication role or setting including the use of specialized classroom and maker space technologies and equipment (e.g. 3D printers, laser cutters, CNC machines, etc.).
Excellent skills in communication, organization, collaboration, and time-management
Ability to work successfully within a team of students, staff and faculty members
Understanding of higher education operations
3-5 years of relevant work experience
Evening and weekend work may be required
