Job Code: 4953Job Grade: H Stanford University is seeking a Life Science Research Professional 3 (LSRP3) to perform complex and advanced imaging experiments and activities involved in defined research projects, and independently conduct a major portion of multiple research projects. This positon is in the School of Medicine, Beckman Center's Cell Sciences Imaging Facility (CSIF). The CSIF provides high resolution, state-of-the-art technologies for imaging and analyzing the molecular and structural organization of cells and tissue as well as bioengineered materials to all Stanford University and industry researchers. The facility offers sophisticated and demanding microscopy techniques (e.g. super-resolution, confocal, FLIM, FRET, FRAP, 2-photon live cell imaging, photo-activation and uncaging, array tomography as well as image processing and analysis.
LSRP3 will apply expert knowledge in both the theory and application of biological light microscopy imaging including experience with advanced techniques such as deconvolution, confocal, multi-photon, super-resolution (SIM, STORM, STED), Fluorescence Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET), Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM), FLIM-FRET, and live cell imaging. LSRA3 will possess a graduate-level understanding of optics and advanced light microscopes as well as a wide ranging knowledge of molecular, cellular and whole organism anatomy and function, particularly those related to the common model organisms (e.g. D. melanogaster, C. elegans), and diseases (e.g. cancer) studied by Stanford's research community. This position requires experience in sample preparation and fluorescence based immunohistochemistry labeling of tissue culture and tissue slices (frozen and FFPE), microscope imaging of subcellular and tissue level structures and interpreting multiparametric microscopy data. The position further requires experience using image analysis and processing software (e.g. ImageJ/FIJI, Volocity, Imaris, Huygens). Must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, organizational and multi-tasking ability, as well as excellent interpersonal and customer service skills. Experience in a microscopy core/facility environment is preferred.
Design research approaches for a major imaging portion of research project(s), including background research, experimental design and execution, problem solving, and writing up for publication. Will make decisions regarding what experimental techniques and imaging conditions should be applied to microscopy research projects. Will decide when and how to conduct imaging experiments with researchers using the facility.
Develop new protocols; test and evaluate a variety of approaches particularly in the development and application of high parameter multiplexing and multiparametric imaging methods of tissue slices using a CODEX imaging platform.
Assist in development and validation of new antibody panels for application on the CODEX imaging platform.
Conduct complex and advanced imaging experiments, and maintain detailed records of experiments and outcomes; analyze and interpret research data resulting from original procedures and methods.
Will advise, design and help execute advanced and complex, advanced imaging experiments of both fixed, frozen and live samples, with students, researchers. Will support and supervise facility director-approved BSL2 imaging experiments.
Will develop and provide as needed, weekly/daily training sessions for students, post-docs and other researchers in the proper and safe operation of high-end imaging systems as well as on image processing and 3D rendering software.
Assist facility director with new research proposals and applications for funding and grants (e.g. S10 instrumentation grants).
Prepare periodic progress reports or written reports on all phases of the research project.
Lead and or participate in multidisciplinary teams across different faculties or schools.
Contribute substantively to the preparation of papers for publication, especially in the methods and results section. May be a co-author on publications depending on level of intellectual contribution. Present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
Perform ongoing literature review to remain current with new procedures and related research; propose new research directions based on new advances discussed in literature.
Oversee supply and equipment budget under minimal supervision of facility director.
Work with health and safety department to ensure lab complies with regulations and all required trainings.
Formally supervise and train new staff or students as needed, including hiring, performance management, and related duties (e.g. monthly facility billing routines). Provide instruction on techniques and consultation on project work.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED): Bachelor's degree in related scientific field and four years of relevant work experience; or Master's degree in a related scientific field and two years relevant experience; or PhD in related science field.
