Residing within the Brand Strategy and Activation team within the University's Marketing and Communication department, the Retail and Merchandise Associate Manager is responsible for planning and executing the operations of The New School's onsite and online retail business. The Associate Manager will be responsible for reaching clear profit goals, and will play a supporting role in developing the long-term university branded merchandise strategy and plan.

Using their business understanding of the retail industry, the Retail and Merchandise Associate Manager will grow The New Store's sales, improve and maintain effective vendor relationships, and ensure positive customer experiences. The manager will be accountable for operating and continually optimizing an efficient retail business, working closely with teams across the university.
Reporting to the Brand Marketing Manager, the role will assist in expanding awareness of the school brand to key audiences, in addition to managing a profitable retail operation.
Ensure that the physical New Store location on campus and e-commerce site (thenewstore.nyc) are fully functional, optimized, and profitable operations.
-Oversee and motivate student workers, including student store manager:
Create a culture of stellar service that leaves shoppers with a positive view of The New School brand
Recruit, train, supervise, and appraise staff of 10-12 students
Mentor and oversee the student store manager, responsible for day-to-day operations: oStaff scheduling, cash handling and reconciliation oInventory receiving, stock replenishment and visual merchandising oEstablish and maintain customer service standards including rapid response to customer queries/concerns
-Work with Brand Strategy team to optimize operations of thenewstore.nyc:
Manage online product set-up and merchandising
Develop a rapid response strategy for online customers
-Develop annual forecasts and business plans, under supervision of the Manager
Maximize profitability, setting and meeting sales targets while staying true to university brand values
Manage budgets, adjusting based on sales trends, product performance, and marketing/merchandising priorities
-Merchandise planning and buying
Source product from existing vendor base and identify/develop new vendor relationships; create and manage purchase orders
Calculate and manage open-to-buy plans, optimizing efficiencies
Oversee pricing and inventory management/control
-Establish and maintain an efficient sales, inventory, and financial reporting system:
Prepare monthly reports for senior management, working closely with the Brand Marketing Manager to determine insights and next steps
Mange retail P&L
Strategic Direction and Promotion
Market and promote specific products, as well as The New Store brand, working closely with the Social Media team
Assist in the development of promotional and marketing plans, including sales promotions in line with university and retail specific seasonality
Assess and recommend products that both reflect the university values and turn a profit
Concept custom collaborations and lines, with the Brand Strategy team
Conduct qualitative research and validation of products with student base
-2-5 years retail management experience, including
Buying and vendor negotiations
E-Commerce -BA in a related field, or retail/marketing/communications background -Strong analytical, prioritizing, interpersonal, problem-solving, and presentation skills -Ability to operate independently and establish relationships with cross-functional teams -Strong, professional and effective verbal and written communication skills -Ability to foster a positive work environment, encouraging feedback and innovation -Self-motivated with critical attention to detail and deadlines
