As a member of the Prospect Research and Management (PRM) group, the Prospect Research Consultant represents the PRM-Research team and manages relationships with a portfolio of fundraising and engagement teams in Alumni Relations and Development (ARD), and/or in Northwestern University’s professional schools. In addition to conducting capacity research and analyses, this position acts as project manager on projects and requests related to these internal clients. In concert with client teams, as well as Prospect Management and Reporting and Analytics partners, the Prospect Research Consultant is responsible for formulating strategies, planning and executing projects, and providing prospect research to enhance the top level of Northwestern University’s pool of prospective individual donors. This position will interact with colleagues at all levels, including program managers and ARD executive staff.
Strategy and Planning
Develop strategies designed to realize the potential of assigned fundraising teams’ prospect pools.
Meet regularly with each client team to evaluate prospect needs, consult on strategy and provide updates.
Manage the planning and execution of projects related to client teams.
Recommend changes to enhance innovation, objectives and goals of ARD prospect development.
Implement ongoing prospect development strategy and data integrity initiatives.
Serve as primary Prospect Research representative to a portfolio of fundraising and engagement teams.
Maintain expertise on alumni and constituents of the schools and programs represented by client teams, keeping abreast of relevant NU activities and initiatives, as well as economic trends affecting these individuals.
Collaborate with teams throughout ARD and NU’s professional schools; key partnerships include:

Reporting and Analytics
Conduct capacity research and analyses to meet prospect identification and prioritization needs:
Proactively initiate identification and evaluation projects designed to discover and analyze new and emerging prospect segments.
Use both standard and novel techniques and tools, including data mining, wealth screening, visual discovery, relationship mapping, news and financial feeds and basic statistical analysis to discover and interpret wealth information, accurately assess and summarize philanthropic capacity.
Develop spreadsheets, tables, charts and illustrations as required to analyze and describe groups of prospects or constituents.
Play a key role in ARD's prospect management and information management functions:
Serve as an expert on Northwestern University's Prospect Management Policies and Procedures:
Demonstrate a solid, detailed knowledge of the University's prospect pool, prospect management business processes, and the proper use and function of prospect information in the database when conducting prospect identification and research activities.
Consult with development officers about prospect pools and individual portfolios. Participate in regular portfolio reviews with assigned client teams.
Generate and maintain accurate, useful prospect information for the division:
Accurately and efficiently obtain information from both internal and external sources, including the Ellucian Advance (CATracks) database, the OnBase document imaging system and various software application tools and external databases.
Participate in testing and review of reports and functionality related to the CATracks database, Business Intelligence (BI) Tool, OnBase document management system and/or other tools and systems.
Safeguard the confidentiality of constituent information at all times; uphold ARD policies regarding confidential information. Adhere to ethical and confidentiality guidelines of both Northwestern University and the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA).
Maintain awareness of issues within the development profession, and of the goals and activities of Northwestern University and its peer institutions. Pursue ongoing professional development through participation in meetings, conferences, and related training opportunities offered by vendors, the University and professional organizations.
Perform related duties and assist with departmental projects as assigned.
Supervise or provide work direction for contract, part-time, temporary, and/or work-study employees as needed.

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree; OR appropriate combination of education and experience.
Minimum Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities.)
Demonstrated creative and flexible research skills, including the ability to analyze, interpret, summarize and present information effectively.
Skilled in reading and interpreting financial documents and information, including SEC documents/filings, thorough knowledge of financial terms, vehicles and types of transactions, as well as investment funds and strategy, and the finance, investment and alternative investment industries.
Well-developed interpersonal skills including the ability to function well in a multiple-team environment, ability to prioritize and work independently, responsibly, and meet deadlines. Excellent oral and face-to-face communication skills, as well as the ability to consistently produce concise, professionally written communications.
Ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff, including executive level clients.
Experience and references demonstrating scrupulous accuracy and attention to detail, including professional/business writing proficiency, as well as the ability to exercise sound, independent judgment and follow established protocols and procedures.
Advanced knowledge and exceptional skills and experience using the MS Office suite of applications (especially Word, Excel and Outlook). Demonstrated ability to use online resources and databases creatively and effectively.
Commitment to professional ethics, ability to apply an ethical code and good judgment. Must be able to handle confidential materials and situations with sensitivity and discretion.

Preferred Qualifications: (Education and experience)
Work experience in a fundraising or nonprofit environment.
Advanced degree in a relevant area of study.
Experience using the Ellucian Advance database system.
Preferred Competencies: (Skills, knowledge, and abilities)
Experience accurately interpreting donors’ giving information and presenting it in research products.
Experience with SQL and Tableau visualization software.
Reading/writing fluency in one or more world languages in addition to English.
