POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE IN RADIO ASTRONOMY INSTRUMENTATION , Haystack Observatory , to support a cutting-edge investigation of Cosmic Dawn radio emissions as a follow-on to the groundbreaking EDGES project (Bowman, J.D.et al., Nature 555, pp.67-70, 2018). This is an experimental program involving design, development, and deployment of small, well-calibrated radio antennas with exquisite sensitivity in remote, radio-quiet locations. Will contribute to the technical development and implementation of this instrumentation and develop methodologies for processing, synthesizing, and analyzing the results. Haystack is a laboratory within MIT whose mission is to carry out cutting-edge research in the field of radio sciences, enabled through development and deployment of innovative new instrumentation and methods. Current projects at the observatory include incoherent scattering radar studies of the ionosphere, ultra-high resolution imaging of super massive black holes with mm VLBI, geodetic VLBI observations for studies of the solid Earth, low frequency imaging of the Sun and the Earth's aurora, and detection of remnant radio signals from the early universe. Many current projects have strong collaborative or international components that require cooperative efforts with other institutes.
REQUIRED : Ph.D. in electrical engineering or related field, with an emphasis on RF engineering; demonstrated skill with the design and fabrication of radio instrumentation; and demonstrated scientific research ability. Consideration will be given to individuals who offer a strong grounding in aspects of both analog and digital RF engineering and instrumentation that might range from feed design to correlation.
