About the Position The School of Architecture at the University of Minnesota is seeking applications for a new Lecturer position with an academic background related to studio instruction and experience in professional practice. Located within a multidisciplinary College of Design, the School of Architecture is the academic hub of vibrant professional and research communities. We seek candidates with the commitment and energy to participate in the intellectual life of the School and College, as well as readiness to teach required and elective courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels.
The successful candidate will have experience and extensive knowledge of the architectural field and firms, as well as a strong design portfolio. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to support interdisciplinary initiatives in teaching with related fields in the College of Design, across the University, and in collaboration with professional organizations in architecture, engineering, and/or building construction. The ideal candidate should have experience in Architectural teaching, including architectural design studio, with an awareness of diverse backgrounds, viewpoints, and communications styles, and with demonstrated effectiveness. The Lecturer will report to the Head.
Appointment The position is a 75% time, 9-month appointment beginning in the 2019-2020 academic school year. The anticipated start date is August 26, 2019. This is an annually renewable academic professional appointment for up to 3 years. Renewal is dependent on funding, performance, and the needs of the College. This is a benefits-eligible position. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Responsibilities • Teach 18 credits during the academic year in a wide variety of classes, including studios and professional practice. • Development course/s, syllabi, and other instructional materials. • Create a welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff and other constituents from diverse backgrounds. • Integrate diversity in curriculum development, teaching, and program design. • Hold weekly office hours. • Consult regularly with the faculty program director/s. • May participate in a range of academic activities, such as curricular meetings, end of semester reviews, guest lectures, etc.
Qualifications • M.Arch or equivalent degree in a related field. • One to three years demonstrated professional and/or teaching expertise in one or more of the following areas: professional practice; design leadership; digital imaging; architectural representation methods or drawing; history or theory; schematic and design development methods; building design programming; site and urban design methods; contract documents; design and construction project management; environmental technology; building systems; materials and methods; structures; etc. • Successful candidates are expected to maintain an active external design practice or leadership position within the community. • Attention to cultural diversity in teaching and/or professional practice and the proven ability to support the University’s commitment to equity and diversity. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
