Specialist VI, Information Technology (Senior HPC Systems Engineer)

The Office of Information Technology is seeking candidates for the position of Senior Systems Engineer for High Performance Computing (HPC). The position reports to the Director of Infrastructure, Virtualization, Storage and High Performance Computing and administers research IT resources including HPC Compute Clusters, Parallel File systems, Job Schedulers, Computer Language Compliers and advanced Linux system administration.
Essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to:
Participates in both complex and routine projects. Frequently interfaces with constituents, including management and/or internal teams to ensure quality, timeliness, and testing of all project/release work
Performs complex HPC software builds using a variety of compiler toolchains and versatile techniques in support of group objectives and the Auburn University research community
Participates in the definition, coordination and support of OIT's research computing infrastructure technology vision
Evaluates and leads implementation of new technology strategies while maintaining detailed knowledge of the current technologies and infrastructure
Maintains internal and external customer relationships in support of the group's service catalog. Provides technical expertise and support for research software and general HPC system usage.
Participates in group projects and may serve as a liaison with OIT project management
Provides on-call after hours support for HPC and other group services

Entry into the applicant pool requires a Bachelor's degree and seven (7) or more years of experience in Linux Systems management and administration.
Must have in-depth knowledge of shell scripting, system programming, compiler toolchains and interpreters including GCC, CMake, Intel, PERL, Python, etc.
Must have experience with building and running containerized software in an HPC environment, utilizing MPI middleware and compiler wrappers, multithreading, and Enterprise Storage and GPFS Parallel file systems.
Must have experience with Linux environment modules, manipulation of environment variables for research software.
Must have experience with automated OS provisioning tools e.g. xcat, Bright or other cluster management software, and the management of clustered systems.
Must have knowledge of information technology principles and applications, IT system management methodologies, and new technologies.

In-depth knowledge of High Performance Compute Cluster administration
In-depth knowledge of Enterprise Storage Technologies including File Sharing and Block storage including ISCSI and Fiber Channel and Infiniband storage area networks (SAN)
In-depth knowledge in C, Shell scripting and PowerShell
In-depth knowledge of Clustered Server and network hardware connectivity, management, monitoring and reporting
Knowledge of Virtual Machine Provisioning, Management and Backup
Knowledge of TCP/IP communication protocols, common service ports, and best security practices
Knowledge of LDAP and Microsoft Active Directory integration
Experience with Azure
Knowledge of multifactor authentication technologies
Knowledge of Linux security practices and tools
