This is a three year fixed-term position. The Collections Assistant will assist the Academic Curator/Collections Manager as needed to support activities of the Stanford University Archaeology Collections of the Stanford Archaeology Center, a collection of over 30 thousand archaeological, ethnographic, and archival items. Activities include collections management, curation, teaching, research, research support, and outreach. CORE DUTIESo Assist curators with the research, development and implementation of changing exhibitions and collection rotations. o Assist with research, writing and oversight of design and production of various publications.o Assist with development of educational programming and oversee implementation, presentation of lectures, symposia and films. o Assist with cataloging collections, prepare registration materials, and assist in planning rotations in galleries. o Answer routine correspondence, public and scholarly inquiries. o Oversee student interns, assist in training of docents. In addition: o Perform tasks related to the creation and maintenance of the collections catalogue, the physical inventorying of objects, and records management related to the collections.o Verify and enter information in the collections database by reviewing pertinent documentation such as catalogue cards, object labels, accession records, and other archives. May undertake additional research as needed. o Reorganize collections in storage, including assessment and execution of re-housing, preventive conservation, and condition reporting. Maintain environmental monitoring records and supervise facilities work. Alert manager to conservation needs, issues, and threats, make recommendations for and assist with response. o Support registration activities relating to accessions, loans, research, exhibition, and coursework.o Train and oversee students, student workers, and volunteers in collections-related tasks (database, inventory, records management, rehousing, file system, etc.). o Support teaching, research, and other requests by generating lists, producing reports, locating and moving objects, producing copies of collections documentation, supervising visits, responding to inquiries, etc.o Support the Academic Curator/Collections Manager's work with students, faculty, researchers, tribes, and others as needed. o Perform other duties as required. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education & Experience:Bachelor's degree and one year of related experience or a combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree preferred. Preference given to a degree in museum studies, conservation, archaeology, anthropology, or a related field, as well as to specialized collections-based degree training (example, MA and/or certificate program in museums) or the equivalent experience. Three or more years of experience working in a best practices professional collections environment (accredited-level standards) and experience in professional care of cultural and/or historical collections preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:o Excellent interpersonal skills and professionalism to interact with a wide range of people at different levels of an organization.o Strong oral and written communication skills, demonstrated presentation skills.o Ability to effectively and efficiently manage multiple priorities, with competing deadlines.o Ability to work independently and as part of a team.o Proficient in MS Office Suite and database management applications.Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: o Project management skills.o Ability to handle fragile and culturally sensitive collections in keeping with accredited museum standards. o Ability to work with sensitive and confidential content in a respectful and trustworthy manner.o Close attention to detail. o Knowledge of relational database software required, working knowledge of PastPerfect preferred.o Demonstrated specialized skills in one or more areas that will assist the current goals of the collections are desired. Areas include: experience working with cultural collections; advanced cataloguing and inventory skills; experience in the physical care and rehousing of museum objects; registration experience; conservation experience; digital photography, digitization, and image processing skills; social media work; and/or grant-writing experience.o Experience in a research and/or teaching collections environment welcome.o Familiarity with Adobe Suite and the Drupal web development platform welcome. Certifications and Licenses: None PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSo Frequently perform desk based computer tasks, seated work, and use light/fine grasping.o Occasionally stand, walk, and write by hand, lift, carry, push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
