The mission of The Department of Residential Life is to facilitate residential student transitions into the intellectual and social communities of the University of California, Berkeley, and to promote personal well-being and respect for the community needs of all residents. In Residential Life this position is charged with the programmatic operation for summer residential students at the University of California, Berkeley. Responsible for providing support to the academic mission of the University by contributing to students’ out of classroom learning. Manages student services for residents using specialized knowledge of learning and student development theory, counsels students and develops and implements programs for students during their summer academic course work to enhance their academic success. Involves planning, developing and implementing programs, activities and processes for students in their co-curricular life at the university, including residential life, community engagement, student conduct, gender identity and sexual violence, leadership development, and other areas.
Summer Operations Preparation •Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Summer Operations & Projects, this position will support summer operations preparation for UC Berkeley Residential Life. •From planning to execution this position will coordinate and participate in summer operations meetings throughout the Academic Year. This position will support the entire Residential Life team to successfully transition into Summer Operations from the Academic Year. •This position will complete tasks to prepare for summer operations such as assessing materials and resources needed for Pre-College, Summer Sessions, Summer Bridge and Summer Edge. •In absence of Assistant Director represent Residential Life with campus colleagues on issues impacting student success and advocacy and serve as liaison with Residential Life team to guide and update on Summer Operation needs throughout the Academic Year. •Offer recommendations to Assistant Director for modification of programs to enhance program effectiveness.
Supervision •Partner with departmental committees and Summer Sessions staff to recruit, hire and onboard, over 70 student staff and 7 limited appointment interns. •Serve as supervisor of record for 70 plus student staff for Pre College, Summer Sessions, Summer Bridge, & Summer Edge. •Mentor cohort of 7 ACUHO-I Assistant Resident Directors. Provide direction and guidance to ARDs, including assistance on most complex and sensitive issues. •Provide direct supervision, coaching, training, evaluation and performance management for student employees. Recommend hiring, and separation of student employees when appropriate. •Conduct regular check-in meetings and staff meetings.
Summer Residential Experience •Plan and coordinate summer residential experience and manage the summer student experience fee. •In collaboration with Summer Sessions, this position will plan large scale events, educational trips and immersive experiences for Pre-College Scholars. •Through the Departmental Projects committee, this position will coordinate large programs and events for all summer residential students. •This position will coordinate move in and move out processes for Residential Life in partnership with key stakeholders. •Serve as a liaison with Housing Facilities and Conferences for spaces and resources.
Project Management & Committee Membership •Support and complete departmental and multi-unit projects and programs within Residential Life designed to achieve specific learning outcomes and to enhance program effectiveness. •As a member of the Departmental Projects committee, this position will collaborate and coordinate execution of large scale events and programs for summer operations. •This position will utilize project management tools to meet goals and ensure continuity of service planning for Residential Life. •This position will be responsible for outlining all building access needed by summer staff and will coordinate with facilities partners to ensure all keys are up to date. •This position will serve in departmental and divisional committees as needed.
Crisis & Risk Management •Serve as expert on risk management for programs and events that involve minors. •This person will consult with Resident Life team on assessing crisis situations and provide direction for action to be taken. •Facilitate conversations with students and staff in crisis situations. •During high peak weeks, this position will be available to provide consultative support to staff managing crisis interventions and student mental health issues after business hours. •This position will ensure that all staff complete compliance trainings for working with minors. •Functions as a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act and under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Act (CANRA) to report observed/suspected abuse or neglect of children, dependent adults and elders to designated law enforcement or social service agencies.•Advanced knowledge in learning theories, advising, and counseling techniques. •Knowledge of student development theories and practice. •Cognizant of specific learning styles and residential curriculum models. •Knowledge of how learning skills issues apply to a research institution. •Knowledge of academic curricula and student academic support services. •Knowledge in designing and implementing learning and pedagogical models. •Knowledge in strategies in critical thinking, reading, writing, note taking, test taking, time management, and goal setting. •Advanced oral and written communication skills. •Interpersonal skills and intercultural competence, including a strong understanding of diversity, inclusion and social justice. •Demonstrated experience in judgment and decision-making, problem-solving and organizational skills in a student life environment. •Skills in monitoring/assessing people, processes or services, to make improvements. •Knowledge of risk assessment principles and demonstrated experience in evaluating risks in a student life environment. •Knowledge in the areas of counseling and crisis intervention, conflict mediation, student and leadership development theory, student conduct administration, multicultural and educational programming, academic support, and safety and security programs.
