UMHB seeks a Director of Learning Resources/Head Librarian with innovative ideas to lead the Townsend Memorial Library. Reporting to the Provost, the Director of Learning Resources/Head Librarian is responsible for helping our students and faculty become information-literate in a digital world. This is a year-round, non-tenure track faculty position, with associate professor or professor rank at time of initial appointment.
The successful candidate is an enthusiastic, experienced, and innovative academic professional with significant experience in information literacy program development, collection development, reference and instruction services, coordination of information technology, assessment of library services, and oversight of library personnel, facilities and budget. The successful candidate will demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff to leverage the university’s library initiatives and resources to contribute to the strategic goals of the campus.
Librarians at UMHB are members of the faculty and are expected to demonstrate continuous professional development in addition to performing their specific responsibilities. This expectation includes participating in and contributing to departmental, library and campus-wide committees/working groups and maintaining a broad awareness of current and emerging issues that affect research, teaching and learning.

Faculty Responsibilities: Activities required of all faculty include exemplary teaching, curriculum development, student advising; professional attainment; and service to department, college, university, and the community.
Specific Responsibilities: The Director of Learning Resources/Head Librarian provides leadership for operational aspects of Townsend Memorial Library. Within the university’s polices and parameters, specific duties will include:
Develop short- and long-range plans for the library, consistent with the vision, mission, and goals of the university.
Provide visionary leadership to achieve the library’s strategic goals.
Provide effective and visionary Library Faculty/staff leadership, supervision and professional development.
Maintain close contact with the deans of the Colleges and Schools by attending faculty meetings as needed, and assessing future needs.
As requested, consult in planning processes to add new academic programs and courses in order to plan for, and provide necessary support.
Develop and further new initiatives, services, and apply emerging technologies to foster learning and research.
Develop policies, in consultation with deans, directors, professional librarians, administration, and faculty concerning the development and provision of library resources and services.
Maintain well-organized procedures for the selection, acquisition and cataloging of physical and online collections, books, periodicals and other library materials to support the university curricula.
Prepare the annual library budget for the Provost via the usual channels, and authorize the expenditure of budgeted library funds.
Have a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the academic library in the prevailing higher education environment
Serve as an advisory member of the graduate council.
Serve as chair of the library faculty and the library Administrative Committee.
Demonstrate ability to work effectively in a culturally-diverse environment.
Exercise sound, unbiased judgment in solving problems and managing conflict.
Serve as liaison librarian to assigned departments and conduct library orientation classes in these assigned areas.
Oversee preparation and maintain updated policy and procedure manuals.
Maintain consortial agreements.
Prepare statistical reports as required by various reporting agencies.
Establish personnel responsibilities and schedules, assign accountability standards, reinforce staff attainment, and evaluate library personnel.
Conduct library staff meetings.
An earned Master's degree in Library Science, Library & Information Science, or related discipline from a regionally accredited institution is required. Or alternatively, an ALA-accredited MLS degree.
Five or more years of full time collegiate-level library leadership experience, including faculty/staff supervision, is required.
Demonstrated effective teaching experience or experience creating and delivering presentations/workshops to groups of 20+ people.
Expertise in information literacy standards and current industry trends with the ability to create engaging presentations, workshops and online materials for use by students, faculty and staff.
Experience selecting and developing reference and circulating materials, including books, periodicals, CDs, DVDs, eBooks, and other electronic resources.
Familiarity with Canvas, Blackboard or other online Learning Management System.
Outstanding written and verbal communication and customer service skills.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and experience cultivating and sustaining collaborative relationships with diverse constituencies including students, faculty, and staff.
Ability to develop and deliver quality results on time.
Appropriate membership in American Library Association, Association of College & Research Libraries, and academic library consortiums.
Excellent teaching and communication skills, a dedication to professional attainment, and commitment to quality improvement are essential. Must be an active, and committed Christian.
