About the Position: Extension and International Programs collaborates with University departments and colleges on unique programs for students from the community and around the world. We are seeking an exceptional individual to join our team as a Communications Specialist (Public Affairs/Communications Specialist II). The ideal candidate in this role should have a positive attitude and an active, energetic mind that is characterized by highly ethical practices and a commitment to diversity, openness, flexibility, integrity, and kindness.
Under the general supervision of the Associate Director of Marketing and Communications, the Communications Specialist is responsible for working independently on a broad range of writing projects involving the many programs of Extension and International Programs (EIP). Assignments include, but are not limited to, website, social media, email, press release, editorial, interviews, news, media, public affairs, events, program, and digital and print advertising content. Edits acquired content for style, tone, grammar, and accuracy; ensures communication and marketing efforts contribute to style standards and best practices for internal and external audiences. Researches, identifies, recommends and incorporates new writing styles and techniques to provide a more engaging and growth oriented web, email, social and digital presence. Acts as liaison between EIP and other campus departments. Will collaborate extensively with Marketing and Communications project and creative leads and Associate Director. Acts as lead to student assistant(s). Other duties as assigned.
Essential Qualifications: Bachelors degree from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field and up to two years or related professional or technical experience. Knowledge of the fundamentals of public affairs and/or media relations, as well as some exposure to marketing and marketing research. Possession of strong written and verbal communication skills with a solid foundation in grammar, spelling, and the composition of various communication vehicles. Ability to serve as a media spokesperson and/or senior editor. Working knowledge of copyright and other applicable laws pertaining to publications and the media. Thorough knowledge of web communication techniques, vehicles, and formats. Ability to effectively use web technology to achieve communication goals. Ability to analyze and select pertinent facts and integrate them into communication vehicles. Possession of strong story development and journalistic writing skills, as well as advanced editorial skills. Knowledge of interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages. Working knowledge of marketing and research techniques and methods. Ability to apply market research to identify communication needs and target audiences. Ability to apply appropriate statistical techniques and methods to research. Possession of exceptional interpersonal skills, including strong public speaking, listening, and interpretive skills. Ability to provide lead work direction. Working knowledge of popular social media outlets with the ability to schedule, submit information, and regulate content.
