The Graduate School at Michigan State University seeks a Data Scientist with curiosity, creativity, focus, and attention to detail to assist in providing strategic leadership in graduate education that advances humanity and furthers knowledge to shape the future. The successful candidate will have strengths in program evaluation, strong demonstrable interpersonal and communication skills to effectively convey specific findings and broad trends to a variety of audiences and positively influence senior leadership and faculty. Additionally, be able to clearly articulate findings to non-technical audiences where activities may include development of data representations, , visualizations, and models; advise on machine learning approaches; and create reports dashboards. The specialist reports to the Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Provost for Graduate Education and works closely and collaboratively with the senior staff in the Graduate School and the MSU Institutional Research Team under the guidance of the Director of Institutional Research.
The candidate should be skilled in analyzing existing complex datasets, creating dashboards and data visualizations for complex data sets, research design and development, writing data summary reports for different audiences, creating a communication plan for disseminating data, overseeing survey administration and data cleaning for external and internal reports. In addition, the ability to facilitate in collecting data to address specific objectives, and help with the research design in preparing proposals for RFPs such as NSF, NIH and CGS. The successful candidate will have a strong background in at least several of the following areas: database technologies, data modeling, collection, and evaluation of complex data sets, statistics, survey development, machine learning, conducting interviews and focus groups, deep learning, and mixed methods. Additionally, the position requires the ability to function well in a team environment and form interdisciplinary teams as appropriate to pursue opportunities.
This will be a 12-month, full-time (100% FTE), Academic Specialist position. We offer the following: An Academic Specialist with 1 year fixed-term appointment with reappointment to additional fixed-terms or appointment into the continuing depending upon performance and available funding.
Doctorate -Statistics, Computational Science, or Social Science discipline
Doctorate degree in statistics, computational science, a social science discipline, or related field including other doctoral degrees with a strong quantitative emphasis; a strong track record demonstrating success in collaborative research projects; several years of experience in statistical consulting, research, data mining, data science, machine learning, data management and analysis; excellent communication skills including, presenting, editing, and publishing as well as accuracy and attention to detail required; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
In depth knowledge of University administrative organization, policies, procedures, and practices for institutional research-oriented roles; ability to use data retrieval and manipulation, and expertise in statistical tools such as SPSS, STATA, SAS, SQL, R, D3, Python, or similar; proven excellence in program management and project management; experience building and leading technical teams across a wide variety of technical domains.
