The new position of Director of Communications will serve as a senior strategist and hands-on leader who will create and implement a modern communications operation to raise the visibility of Business and Operations (B&O).
The Director will work with all B&O units and the Office of University Communications (OUC) to identify and address communications needs. Located within the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Business and Operations, the Director will work directly with the Offices of Facilities Management, Business and Auxiliary Services, Public Safety and Emergency Management, Business and Real Estate, and Sustainability to drive office-wide communications efforts. The Director will ensure the coordinated, timely, and effective flow of information across multiple communications channels and platforms -- within the office, across the university, and externally.
The Director will provide hands-on project management related to communications needs and create and implement a suite of new tools, services, and resources to help Business and Operations to communicate more effectively and proactively. The incumbent will work closely with the Senior Vice Chancellor, Director of Administration, and senior staff from all B&O Units to shape key communications planning and consistent messaging across channels.
Master's degree preferred in Writing, Journalism, Technical Communication or related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Seven to 10 years of successful experience in the management of strategic communications and public relations activities in a non-profit environment. Must be able to develop positive and productive relationships with a diverse set of colleagues and stakeholders to facilitate a highly professional and impactful communications team. Experience translating sometimes technical information into mainstream audiences and media. Experience within the setting of a large non-profit organization or university/college environment. Experience facilitating activities across multiple divisions, assuming a leadership role when necessary. Experience supervising the activities of external consultants. Experience developing and executing communications plans.
