The Philip Merrill College of Journalism at the University of Maryland is seeking a Social Media and Audience Engagement Editor to teach social media courses and manage social media and audience engagement for Capital News Service (CNS) and the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism.
The Social Media and Audience Engagement Editor will have the following primary responsibilities:
Teach classes at the Philip Merrill College of Journalism focused on social media, audience engagement, digital journalism and other topics of expertise.
Lead social media capstone efforts for the CNS newsroom and promote website content, grow and engage the audience, and analyze website and social metrics.
Manage social platforms for CNS for the purposes of journalism, newsgathering and storytelling. Social platforms include but are not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Instagram, YouTube and Reddit.
Grow audience to the CNS website, CNS social platforms and special projects.
Manage, analyze and distribute data analytics and metrics for social platforms, the CNS website and special projects.
Assist with management of the CNS website, including programming homepage and section front content and keeping the site fresh and readable.
Assist in the development of the CNS brand as a leading student-driven, non-profit news site.
Work in coordination with the Howard Center for Investigative Journalism to promote and drive audience to investigative projects and elevate projects through audience-centric approaches to reporting.
Candidates must have the following skills / experience:
A background in managing social platforms for a news organization.
A proven track record in engaging and building audience for a news platform.
Expertise in analytics and metrics, both for websites and social media platforms.
Expertise utilizing social media platforms for the purposes of journalism, newsgathering and storytelling.
Expertise in website programming and production for a news site.
Familiarity with the usage of content management systems for website management and updating.
The following secondary skills are strongly preferred, but not required:
Teaching abilities and experience.
HTML / CSS coding skills
Data analysis skills
Adobe CC software skills
