The successful candidate will have a strong background in the natural sciences and experience in teaching for diversity, equity, and inclusion in outdoor settings, providing programs for a variety of age-groups from K-12 to adult audiences. In addition to teaching, the candidate should have experience supervising staff and/or interns and managing programs ranging from day trips to summer camps. Experience in environmental and/or educational research is preferable but not required. The candidate will serve as primary liaison between Black Rock Forest and the institutional members of the Black Rock Forest Consortium and will work closely with research and conservation staff to bring state of the art programming to the varied constituent audiences of Black Rock Forest. The candidate should be creative, dynamic, innovative, self-motivated, and willing to work with a variety of audiences including teachers, researchers and conservationists to develop and implement relevant programming in the 3,914 acre forest.
Liaise with consortium member institutions
Lead forest explorations and lab investigations in science and other disciplines for groups of students from elementary school age to college
Ensure that all educational programs promote cultural competence, diversity, equity, and inclusion
Support logistics for the visits of school groups and the public
Develop new curriculum modules for consortium members’ use
Support consortium teachers as they develop curricular activities
Connect forest research and conservation to education programs
Support citizen science activities based in the Forest for students and the public
Coordinate and manage the BRF Summer Science Camp for youth
Manage online access to forest data and curricular materials (e.g. Peck Stacpoole Online Education Collection)
Maintain physical educational resources such as field equipment, lab spaces and the new Moretti Education Center
Recruit and supervise interns
Participate in grant writing activities
Support implementation of technological advances in education (e.g. smartphone app innovations and data collection digital tools)
Qualifications and Experience of the Successful Candidate
Bachelor’s and advanced degrees, preferably including environmental or related sciences and/or STEM/STEAM education
Significant experience in formal or informal K-12 educational settings teaching disciplines that relate to forest ecology
Experience with and affinity for delivering place-based outdoor learning experiences (e.g. NOLS, Outward Bound type experiences), as well as informal science and sustainability lessons.
Demonstrated cultural competence and experience with promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in teaching and organizations
Experience teaching a broad age-range of students (some subset of K -12, college level students, teachers and other adult audiences)
Experience designing curriculum, with a view to adapting for different age-groups and diverse populations of youth, including youth of color, immigrants and underserved youth.
Experience and knowledge of curriculum development in experiential and transdisciplinary education (e.g. STEM and STEAM)
Experience in the use of technologies for teaching and learning
Experience with citizen science investigations
Excellent communication skills for a wide range of age-levels (writing, oral, and digital)
Experience with creating hands-on inquiry-based learning activities

About Black Rock Forest Consortium
Black Rock Forest Consortium is an environmental education, research, and conservation organization with a membership of 23 prominent universities, schools, and research institutions from the New York metro area. Established in 1989 and located 50 miles north of Manhattan, the Consortium operates a biological field station and maintains Black Rock Forest, a 4,000-acre private preserve located in the scenic Hudson Highlands, a National Heritage Area. Since1989, Consortium scientists have published more than 425 scientific articles and papers, including 31 doctoral dissertations and master’s theses. The Consortium has built two award-winning green buildings, including a Center for Science and Education with laboratories and classrooms and a Forest Lodge with 60 beds and a lecture hall capacity of 140.
