Princeton University is seeking an associate project manager (APM) to work with two large software and computing activities in High Energy Physics (HEP), with a combined annual budget of $20M. These activities are central to U.S. participation in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), an international mega-science project located at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland. Research at the LHC is part of a decades-long quest to understand the fundamental building blocks of nature and their interactions. This research led to the discovery of the Higgs Boson in 2012 and future LHC data will be used to look for an explanation for Dark Matter and potentially other discoveries.Candidates from multiple scientific and engineering backgrounds are encouraged to apply, including applicants from industry who would like to return to the academic environment and apply industry project planning skills to the exciting LHC computational and data science challenges, as well as early career candidates from academia who are looking for a career change.The successful candidate will split his/her time equally between project management activities as an integral member of two management teams: (1) the Institute for Research and Innovation in Software for High Energy Physics (IRIS-HEP, http://iris-hep.org/), and (2) the U.S. CMS Software and Computing Operations Program (U.S. CMS S&C).The APM will work closely with the IRIS-HEP Executive Director and the U.S. CMS S&C operations program managers, and will be responsible for:* developing and documenting project plans annually with each of the corresponding two executive teams,* identifying clear milestones/deliverables in each plan* tracking project progress relative to plan and milestones, including use of risk evaluation and change control processes* tracking project products (documents, software) as well as metrics to measure impacts* preparing reports and presentations for funding agencies (NSF and DOE)* preparing more general communications about the projects for larger audiences (e.g. the CMS experiment, the HEP community, the public) through websites, project dashboards, newsletters, etc.* collaboration with financial and project office administrators as requiredThis position will require occasional travel both domestically and internationally, and will be based either at Princeton University, in Princeton, NJ, or at Fermilab, near Chicago, IL, subject to negotiation before appointment. The rank for this appointment will be associate professional specialist, or higher, depending on experience.
