The Product Design Program, College of Design, University of Minnesota seeks to fill a Lecturer position to teach critical core courses at the undergraduate for up to two years. The Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in product design is a four-year interdisciplinary degree with a foundation based in principles of industrial design. This is not a traditional industrial design program. Our program requires students to also take classes in physics, engineering, design, computer programming, anthropology, and entrepreneurship. The Product Design program also offers minors at both undergraduate and graduate level and will begin a new graduate Masters’ program.
This is a 100%-time, nine-month (academic year), annually renewable, academic professional appointment at the level of Lecturer or Teaching Specialist. Appointment is expected to be renewed for up to two years; renewal is contingent upon performance and available funding. The expected start date is August 26, 2019, with the initial appointment term ending May 29, 2020.
Contribute to a cutting-edge, rigorous, and successful Product Design program.
The duties for this position include:
Teach 6 undergraduate courses in the Product Design program.
Supervise student teaching assistants.
Mentor undergraduate students.
Attend and participate in program class critiques and events.
Contribute to program meetings and events.
Contribute to the ongoing development of the Product Design curriculum.
Participate in department and program area meetings and committees.
Maintain a relationship with our industry partners, as appropriate.
Contribute to and support the mission of the land grant institution.
The Product Design Program, College of Design, University of Minnesota seeks to fill a Lecturer position to teach critical core courses at the undergraduate for up to two years.
Demonstrated record of effective teaching of product/industrial design courses at the collegiate level (including studio, sketching, concept visualization, model making, CAD, manufacturing).
Evidence of strong collaborative and interpersonal skills.
Product Design industry experience.
Attention to inclusion and diversity in teaching in addition to above requirements.
A terminal degree (MS, MBA, PhD) in industrial design or a related discipline by start date; candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in a field related to product design and at least 6 years of product design industry experience will be considered for an appointment at the Teaching Specialist level.
Proficiency with CAD software including Solidworks, Rhino or Alias, Keyshot.
Proficiency with Wacom/digital sketching.
Terminal degree in industrial design or related discipline by start date preferred.
Technologically innovative approaches to teaching/learning.
Experience working collaboratively with academic departments and in the community.
An appreciation and understanding of how technology and engineering play a role in new product development.
Attention to diversity and inclusion in all of its forms as it relates to teaching/learning.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, staff and the community.
