Georgetown Day School, an independent day school in Washington, D.C., seeks a Lower/Middle School Librarian for the 2019-2020 school year. Primary job responsibilities include working closely with the head librarian to nurture an inviting, inclusive environment that supports students to become eager readers, curious and critical information seekers, and joyful lovers of learning. As a diverse, inclusive school devoted to preparing students to live and work in an increasingly globalized and multicultural society, GDS is particularly interested in professionals with demonstrated interest and experience in working in such a school setting. Rich content, creative pedagogy and authentic relationships are essential components of a GDS classroom, library, or extracurricular activity. Providing those elements, working collaboratively with colleagues, and placing the students’ interests and experiences at the heart of the classroom are essential components of the job.
Library Mission Statement:
The GDS Library program teaches students to think critically, clearly, and creatively about all forms of information, and to use that information effectively, ethically, and responsibly. Our collections and teaching foster strength of character, concern for others, and self-awareness by engaging students in actively exploring the relationship of their own identities with those reflected -- and not reflected -- in the literature and media they encounter. We recognize that new and challenging ideas can emerge from experiences with books and information, and believe that providing unfettered access for choices of material allows students to self-advocate, take risks, and ultimately become lifelong readers.
Support collection development with an eye towards diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice and representation
Lay the foundation for the schoolwide Information Literacy Curriculum and a lifelong love of reading through weekly classes with PK, K, 1st and 2nd Grades
Maintain a fun, nurturing, creative and supportive learning environment
