The Department of Medicine is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego and employs 486+ full-time salaried faculty members and 100+ academic appointees. Staff personnel include 600+ staff in 9 bargaining units, students, and volunteers. There are 250 clinical faculty practicing at multiple sites and hospitals.
The Division of Infectious Diseases and Global Public Health (ID+GPH) within the Department of Medicine at UC San Diego aims to eliminate the burdens of infectious diseases and health disparities by delivering outstanding patient care, conducting world-class multidisciplinary health research, directing the institutional response to antimicrobial resistance, preventable healthcare associated infections, and emerging pathogens, and offering leadership, consultation and training on global public health, gender equity, microbiology, and infectious diseases topics.
Under the general supervision of the Clinical Operations Director to the Antiviral Research Center (ARC), the Communications Coordinator is responsible for the execution and evaluation of marketing, social media and outreach for the Primary Infection Resource Consortium (PIRC) program. Responsible for strategically articulating the PIRC program's vision, mission and goals through look, feel and content for target populations.
Creates and manages social media channels and advertisements and posts regularly to keep target audience informed of PIRC program activities. Schedules and coordinates the timely production of print and electronic documents and promotional items; identifies artwork/graphics to be included, advises on design decisions while adhering to brand standards, and confers with graphic designers and printers or other vendors regarding production specifications and timelines.
Responsible for the program's communications, which include but are not limited to written, visual, verbal, digital and electronic communications. Duties include content development, proofreading and copy-editing newsletters and advertisement and promotional materials, ensuring science accuracy, relevant to the PIRC program's activities and events for both the web and social media outlets.
Collaborates with supervisor and principal investigator of the PIRC program to determine the best communication methodologies to promote important research objectives and reach target populations, implements these methodologies, evaluates their effectiveness, and provides reports and recommendations based on findings. Works closely with and interviews clinical staff to develop promotional and educational talks around sexual health, focusing on human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infections (STI) prevention, testing, and engagement in care.
In addition, develops content for funding purposes to continue the program's outreach and marketing efforts. Manages the PIRC, Good to Go, and affiliated web pages, including updating content, ensuring accuracy and timeliness, uploading content, images, and multimedia elements including photos and videos, and monitors incoming emails from the public and responds to or appropriately forwards these inquiries.
Establishes relationships and works closely with community partners and social influencers on outreach and marketing approaches to improve community and target population engagement. Researches, identifies, plans, coordinates and attends community events to promote research activities and reach target populations.
This position has a dotted reporting line to University Communications and Public Affairs to ensure accuracy with university messaging, protocols for managing external media, and brand adherence. Responds to non-complex, basic inquiries from public or media.Responses require some research and organization of material. Assists in gathering and preparing news and information about the location.
Bachelor's Degree in related area; and/or equivalent experience/training.
A minimum of two (2+) or more years of relevant experience.
Demonstrated working knowledge of concepts and principles of news, media communications and media relations. Experience creating and writing content for social media pieces.
