Communications The Communications department supports leaders at all levels of the institution to promote project and campaign efforts, inform key audiences, and protect and advance Pew's reputation. The department provides a comprehensive range of communications services for all programmatic and administrative units and Trusts-operated projects. Our in-house expertise includes: strategy and message development; editorial support; design and creative services; media event planning; digital and video production; and social media. The unit oversees all communications policies, guidelines, and processes in order to ensure production of the highest quality work and effectively steward Pew's resources.
Position Overview This position, based in Pew's Washington, DC office, reports to the associate manager, communications and is a member of the Pew communications staff supporting the health and science programs. The senior associate is an expert writer who works to draft web analyses, write and place opinion articles, and develop social media materials to support a portfolio that encompasses biomedical research, conservation science, marine research, and public health issues ranging from antibiotic resistance to food and drug safety, opioid use and health information technology. The position requires versatility and the ability to write clearly about highly complex health and science issues; excellent interpersonal and organizational abilities; proven writing and editing abilities for print and online platforms; and experience working with senior staff. The position occasionally supports institutional communications functions.
Communications Strategy, Writing, and Online Communications
Works with communications colleagues to develop and implement communications strategies that support the health and science programs, with a focus on ideas for written communications products and digital outreach, including opinion articles, newsletters, press releases, advisories, statements, speeches, presentations, fact sheets, web analyses, policy briefs, brochures, and other communications materials for public dissemination, including social media materials.
Writes and edits communications materials personally, or in collaboration with project staff and Pew's editorial team.
Works with digital team members to develop, write, and edit materials for the web and social media, and assists in developing and executing digital strategy that optimizes usage of online tools.
Media Relations and Coordination
Assists communications colleagues as needed with media outreach, especially outreach to editorial boards and media list maintenance.
Provides communications coordination support to program staff, including handling clearance and approvals for written products as required.
Contributes to the management of Pew communications calendars and the weekly communications report.
Provides back-up to communications colleagues throughout the health and science project as needed.
Contributes to and participates in communications department tasks as assigned, as well as broader Pew-wide projects and/or committees as needed.
Assists other communications program teams as needed.
Other duties as assigned.
Bachelor's degree required.
A minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience required in health or science communications. Experience in public policy or advocacy campaigns at the state level is a plus. State government, Capitol Hill, or executive branch or agency experience in health, science and nonprofit communication is preferred.
Prior to commencing employment with Pew, candidates for this position who were registered to lobby in any jurisdiction must certify termination of previous registration(s) and provide copies of termination notices with said jurisdiction(s) to Pew.
Demonstrated ability to craft communications strategies that support nonpartisan advocacy for legislative and executive branch policy work at the state and national level.
Excellent written, verbal, and oral communications skills, including ability to synthesize material, focus on the essence of an issue or research findings and then communicate it to a broader audience in a captivating manner.
Significant experience in drafting print and online materials, including opinion articles, on complex topics for health and science organizations or policymakers.
Knowledge of media operations and news organizations, with an understanding of traditional and social media and a keen sense of how to adapt to changes in the landscape.
Ability to work well in a team and independently.
