This position involves advanced research exploring both circuit and device level characteristics of microelectronic devices & materials, including commercial and custom implementations produced using state-of-the-art process technologies. Research assignments involve development and application of novel analysis techniques using advanced analytical capabilities that leverage commercial and customized tools/equipment. These assignments offer the chance to impact the security and operating robustness of devices over a diverse set of mission areas, technologies and applications working as part of a multidisciplinary team committed to solving security device challenges facing our nation. As part of our team, you will engage in work across the technology spectrum impacting a variety of commercial and custom microelectronics platforms impacting national security.
To support Sandia's national security missions, our scientists and engineers engage in a variety of advanced research areas including:
Deep physical analysis of legacy/modern semiconductor devices, circuit structures, and memories
Assessment of advanced electrical device characteristics, circuits and logic behaviors
Development, advancement and application of novel analysis techniques & tools
Detection of residual flaws and unexpected physical/functional behaviors
Novel approaches for protecting devices and circuits from external influences

Master's degree in a related discipline plus 2 years' experience; or a Doctorate in a related discipline; or Bachelor's in a related discipline plus 6 years' experience
Experience in the development or analysis of modern digital semiconductor devices & circuits, and the use of analytical tools/techniques for understanding detailed device functionality and/or failures.
Ideally, we would like for your background to include some of the following:
Masters/MS Degree OR PhD in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Material Science, or an applicable equivalent STEM degree.
Experience conducting applied research resulting in creative technical solutions
Familiarity with modern commercial microprocessors (Intel, AMD), processor cores (ARM, etc.), microcontrollers and programmable logic devices (CPLD, FPGA)
Experience in applying failure analysis techniques using (for example) electron beam (SEM) and/or laser microscopy (SOM, LVI/LVP) tools
Well-developed leadership skills with the ability to prioritize and execute in a disciplined and focused manner
Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to explain complex ideas clearly and concisely
Active DOE Q security clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) granted Q-level security clearance and SCI clearance, which may require a polygraph test.
