The Office of the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning (VPTL) supports Stanford faculty and instructors, schools, and departments in advancing Stanford educational experiences for undergraduate, graduate, professional, and lifelong learners.
VPTL seeks a highly motivated and dedicated individual to help the finance team create and use financial and other information to inform, monitor, and instigate operational activity relative to VPTL's organizational goals. The financial analyst will help assess and create more efficient and effective financial accounting operations, analysis, and reporting. In addition, when needed, the analyst will assist the financial operations team to record the financial consequences of VPTL's program and service activity. The successful candidate should have a service-oriented mindset that is driven by a desire to provide meaningful and timely information to a broad set of stakeholders inside the organization and across all seven schools at Stanford. The candidate must possess strong initiative and a desire to improve the use of data for standard reporting as well as operational monitoring and strategic decision-making. We are looking for an individual who successfully works both independently and as a member of a project team. The financial analyst position is part of the financial management and reporting group on the finance team.
The purpose of the financial analyst position is to work independently and collaboratively with others to meet the financial management needs of VPTL program owners, unit managers, and leaders; Stanford school and department managers and leaders; as well as Stanford university leaders.
Perform and design ad hoc analyses of large complex data sets: reconcile complex accounts. Identify and resolve complex issues which may span multiple areas.
Construct and assemble data for budgeting and decision making; develop conclusions, and present high level summary of recommendations. May develop annual budget for individual department/unit.
Conduct analysis and resolution, and recognize exceptions. Participate in developing solutions that may require policy changes or the development of new processes; maintain broader organizational perspective in decision making.
Develop reports and presentations of complex financial data and metrics for management and third parties.
Participate as a member of a project team; support new initiatives. Make decisions determining approach to managing and completing processes.
Participate in critical analysis of existing systems and processes, and identify opportunities for process improvement.
Provide consulting advice to client group(s); serve as a resource on matters that require specific technical, financial, or subject matter expertise; support negotiations with external partners.
Analyze accounting transactions and information to summarize current financial position at the unit or organization-wide level. Construct and assemble data for decision making; develop conclusions, and present high level summary of recommendations.
Capture, track, and report revenue and expenses; determine appropriate procedures for accounting record preparation, research of transactions and reporting. Oversee, reconcile, and resolve problems relative to complicated accounts.
Collect data and perform research on details of transactions. Generate, review, analyze and communicate financial data that reflects actual financial performance against approved budgets. Prepare and present quantitative and qualitative analyses focusing on variances from budget and prior data.
Maintain and review accounting process controls; recommend and implement any approved modifications; perform preliminary analysis and recommend solutions. Develop and maintain desktop procedures and process documentation for area of responsibility.

Education & Experience:
Bachelor's degree plus four years of applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant work experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Advanced proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office suite, especially Excel.
Demonstrated knowledge of financial systems; internet and computer literacy.
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
Strong communication skills, including ability to prepare materials for and clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences and client groups.
Demonstrated project management skills and ability to contribute to or lead part of a multi-functional team.
Intermediate proficiency in business applications, such as Microsoft Office; intermediate Excel skills.
Demonstrated knowledge of and experience with accounting systems and the internet; computer literacy.
Understanding of and ability to apply accounting skills and concepts.
Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
Demonstrated communication skills, including the ability to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal audiences and client groups.
Demonstrated project management skills and ability to contribute as part of a project team.
Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
Frequently sit, sort, file paperwork or parts, grasp lightly, and use fine manipulation, lift, carry, push and pull objects that weigh 10 pounds or less.
Occasionally write by hand, twist, bend, stoop and squat.
Rarely stand, walk, reach or work above shoulders and use a telephone.
