The McGraw Center for Teaching and Learning seeks a highly qualified technologist to oversee the operations of the Digital Learning Lab – a technology-rich teaching environment based in Apple technologies. The Lab has specialized display and audio capabilities that provide a flexible space for teaching and learning with technology, consultation, and support for digital course assignments and other aspects of digital pedagogy.
Reporting to the Associate Director of Educational and Classroom Technologies, the position will also work closely with other staff members from the McGraw Center, for example, those who support the undergraduate curriculum, as well as other Center efforts. Job responsibilities include maintaining an up-to-date Lab image, collaborating with faculty members on appropriate technology assignments, and overseeing and recruiting a student staff. The successful candidate will provide advice on effective and appropriate technologies for teaching and learning, work with faculty to provide appropriate in-class workshops held in the DLL on topics relating to the use of these tools as they relate to digital course assignments.
Additional support in the Lab is provided by the approximate 15 part-time student media specialists. These media specialists are recruited based on their experience in multimedia work such as video editing, audio recording, web- and print design, and data visualization. The Lab manager will be expected to recruit these students, support and arrange workshop programming conducted by these students, and to provide training to these students on the proper operations of the Lab.
Courtesy, clarity of expression, and strong communication skills are required for the position. The successful application must possess excellent interpersonal skills in dealing with clients of various ages, cultural background, and levels of technical proficiency, as well as demonstrate an avid interest in the potential of technology in teaching and learning.
This position resides in, and oversees, the McGraw Center's Digital Learning Lab (DLL) in the Peter B. Lewis Science Library. This summer, the DLL will undergo a series of renovations to further enhance the teaching environment.
Identify opportunities for the purposeful use of educational technologies in higher education
Conduct workshops on topics related to multimedia technologies and managing other programming that fits the mission of the Teaching and Learning Center in supporting the undergraduate curriculum
Raise the profile and campus awareness of the Lab’s services through occasional presentations and other outreach activities
Provide training and support walk-in customers primarily in regard to applications found in the Adobe Creative Suite, with an emphasis on video editing, bitmap- and vector-editing programs
Provide maintenance of all hardware and software, including updates, patches, and the regular imaging of all Lab computers
Redefine the design and direction for the Digital Learning Lab, tailoring its offerings to curricular needs
Seek out and share up-to-date knowledge about appropriate uses of technology across disciplines
Keep the Lab and its mission current with trends in higher education
Provide expertise with multimedia and instructional development tools
Advise and collaborate with faculty members, colleagues and students in developing workshops for technologies
Offer training, documentation, and general computing support to students and faculty
Recommend appropriate hardware and software to meet academic needs
Keeping the Lab equipment and furniture in good working order as well as maintaining security and cleanliness with the help of the student specialists
The Digital Learning Lab Manager is the systems administrator for the Digital Learning Lab: his/her responsibilities include maintaining hardware; installing software; supporting faculty and students using the lab; and troubleshooting sophisticated hardware and software problems involving 20 Macintosh computers. Experience in maintaining a multi-machine image (with centralized upgrades) is critical for the position.
The DLL hosts a variety of Princeton courses; the Digital Learning Lab Manager provides multimedia-based workshops, oversees the scheduling, and necessary computer configurations for such needs.
The DLL is student-staffed outside of business hours; the Digital Learning Lab Manager also hires, trains, supervises, and administers the payroll for the student specialists.
Excellent technical skills are essential, as are strong oral and written communications skills, the ability to manage student staff on tight project deadlines, and partner with graduate students, professionals, and faculty members on collaborative projects. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated, with a keen sense of responsibility and flexibility and a willingness to learn.
The Digital Learning Lab Manager is also expected to actively track emerging trends in pedagogy and technology and keep up to date through professional development activities. The successful candidate should have strong familiarity with Apple computers, the Apple OS X operating system, and the software used in academic settings particularly in multi-machine installations that require imaging. Some knowledge of Linux is a plus, as is familiarity with software used in math and science disciplines, such as Mathematica, MatLab, and statistical analysis tools, especially R.
A bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of current trends in educational technology and an intrinsic desire to learn new and emerging technologies that apply to education.
Expertise in software applications commonly used in Princeton's course curriculum, such as the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of tools, is required.
Experience in higher education lab management and in teaching as an educational technology professional preferred.
Experience with common packages for statistical analysis and visualization such as R and Matlab a plus.
Experience with common office applications, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint
NOTE: Finalists for the position will be expected to run a demonstration of an introductory workshop on an academic-technology application of their choice.
