Reporting to the Department Administrator, the Staff Assistant provides front-line office support to the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations. The Staff Assistant acts as a liaison between a wide variety of constituencies, including faculty, students, staff, and the public.Works independently with minimal supervision. Updates supervisor on status of projects.
Duties & Responsibilities
1.First point of contact for department: greets visitors, receives and sorts mail, answers and directs phone inquiries.
2.Inputs the department's course catalog in My.Harvard.Advises faculty on course scheduling policies.Schedules classrooms and reserves department's proprietary rooms for courses and events in Roombook.Liaises with FAS Registrar's Office regarding course evaluations, exams, and other course-related projects.
3.Assists with course websites in Canvas.
4.Maintains departmental master calendar and directories.
5.Works as a team member with other office staff on event planning and execution.Reserves event spaces.Designs and distributes departmental event announcements.
6.Coordinates with Semitic Museum staff regarding use of museum spaces.Submits and follows up on requests for building maintenance.
7.Updates department's website using OpenScholar.
8.Solicits information, edits, and distributes the department's digital newsletter.
9.Manages department's social media accounts.
10.Assists with onboarding of new faculty, researchers, and staff.
11.Other responsibilities as needed.

Three or more years of administrative / office experience.Education beyond high school may count towards experience.
B.A. preferred; additional work experience may count towards education.Three years' experience in an academic setting strongly preferred.Familiarity with Harvard systems a plus.Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.Excellent writing and editing skills.Experience with social media and graphic design is desirable.Positive attitude with ability to interact professionally and courteously with a diverse range of personalities and styles.Ability to handle shifting priorities and work on multiple tasks simultaneously.Ability to effectively problem-solve with high degree of discretion.Strong computer skills and experience using Microsoft Suite applications and Outlook strongly preferred.Willingness to learn new software.
