The Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study (RIAS), one of the thirteen schools of Harvard University, is seeking a mission-focused, strategic, and process-minded, development leader to provide strategic and operational direction for the Radcliffe Institute's fundraising programs. Reporting to the Associate Dean for External Relations, the Director of External Relations (DER) will lead and manage an integrated team and set of services, encompassing stewardship and acknowledgments, direct appeals (mail, email and student callers), giving societies, proposal development, academic and development coordination, development communications, and development operations.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages a team providing the following development activities direct marketing and the annual fund, planned giving marketing, stewardship acknowledgements, gift societies, dean's correspondence, volunteer management, board services, and special initiatives. Provides leadership, sets and evaluates individual goals as well as departmental goals, develops and sustains appropriate training, and mentoring. Creates strategies to enhance staff retention and provides opportunities for professional development for both individual and group success.
Oversees relationships with University Development Operations for the entire Institute. Serves as the primary point of contact for the Institute's Communications department, and helps to prioritize projects and monitor the quality and timeliness of deliverables.
Develops and implements staff training across functional areas, in coordination with the Director of Major and Planned Giving. Organizes team and management meetings and retreats.
Serves on administrative initiatives, task forces and committees. Serves on the Institute's council of Administrative Directors .
Programmatic Initiatives and Development Coordination:
Serves as department lead on programmatic and development alignment. Researches and writes strategic external relations documents, including gift terms and proposals for fundraisers to present to prospective donors. Drives the creation of new gift opportunities as needs arise by coordinating with the dean, finance dean, and relevant program leaders.
Manages the gift terms process, including drafting complicated terms, delegating and approving standard gift terms drafted by the donor relations coordinator
Advises and trains gift officers on gift opportunities, does the research for and writes major gift proposals, personally drafts complicated gift terms.
Works closely with the Dean's office to identify and translate emerging Institute priorities into compelling gift opportunities.
Organizes and runs monthly meetings with RIAS academic program directors on development activity. Ensures timely follow up.
Annual Fund, Donor Engagement and Stewardship:
Leads the annual giving program and sets goals targeted at increasing unrestricted support for Institute
Develops annual giving fundraising strategies
Partners with the major and planned giving team to develop stewardship strategies and tactics for donors at all levels of annual giving and oversee annual fund stewardship efforts,
Drives annual Radcliffe Day planning and execution, while partnering with key Institute stakeholders such as Communications, the Dean's Office and Events such as Radcliffe on the Road programming
Planning and Administration:
Analyzes business processes and implements required procedures to drive new business practices
Plans and oversees annual departmental plans, liaises with the University Development Office (UDO), manages and completes projects related to emerging priorities.
Working with the Finance Office, manages and oversees ER's financial and business planning activities

Bachelor's degree required
Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in Development or a related field.
Outstanding writing skills
Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication, presentation skills and negotiation skills required
Ability to successfully manage multiple assignments simultaneously and deliver materials on a strict timeline
Knowledge of social media and other digital marketing/communications platforms
Proficient with Microsoft Office software applications
Master's degree preferred.
Demonstrated ability to lead through influence and negotiation.
Must be a well-organized, patient, flexible problem-solver with long-range vision.
Ability to build, manage, and influence relationships with a wide variety of constituencies.
Successful candidate will be an integral member of the Radcliffe's senior staff and will be expected to establish collaborations, build coalitions, and implement and lead change
Knowledge of fundraising software applications such as Raiser's Edge or Harvard's Advance system.
Higher education experience preferred.
Demonstrated team player experience.
Must possess excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize work assignments.
