The Sustainability Data Analyst will build out a dynamic data practice that tracks operational performance and enhances institutional decision-making. The Sustainability Data Analyst is responsible for providing strategic analytical and tactical support for all sustainability projects with data-related needs and for setting an overall strategy for the collection, analysis, management, and communication of data and metrics that span across the University in various data formats and applications. This individual will synthesize complex data from multiple sources into compelling stories. Primary responsibilities include:
Collect, manage, and ensure the quality and integrity of data from multiple sources [e.g. energy, water, materials, food, transportation, waste] throughout campus
Oversee greenhouse gas inventory update and expansion process
Perform cost analysis where applicable, manage a sustainability analytics database development process as well as any ad hoc analysis needed
Serve as a reporting and analytics expert by assisting with the development of relational and dimensional models and reports
Write an annual metrics performance report, develop infographics and graphs to illustrate data trends
Direct the development of an overall sustainability analytics database
Required: Bachelorâ™s Degree in Computer Science or related field
Preferred: Advanced Degree in Computer Science, or with a similar technical and computational emphasis
5-7 years of experience, or 3-5 years of work experience after a masterâ™s degree, or 2-3 years' experience with a PhD
Expertise with at least one statistical programming language, i.e. Python(preferred), R, Stata, or similar
Proficient in MS Office software with advanced knowledge of Excel
Expertise and ability to think creatively about which analytic approaches and computing technologies are most appropriate for a given data situation
Strong âœsoftâ skills including ability to work with a variety of individuals at various levels across the University and externally
Expertise in most or all of the following areas:
data mining, exploration, and visualization
databases and data management
algorithm design and evaluation
high-performance and distributed computing
Strong communicator, and ability to translate technical challenges and opportunities into non-technical language
Strong project management skills required including the ability to lead a project team, prioritize tasks and provide mentoring as needed
Requires the ability to work as a contributing member of a team, work productively, patiently, and cooperatively with other teams, individuals and external customers
Experience working with Energy and/or Sustainability Metrics preferred
Final candidate required to successfully pass a criminal and education background check satisfactory to Brown University.
